hi, im wondering how to encode several >2gb w64 files to a lossy format like mp3 or ogg
this is what ive tried so far:
sox: Failed reading itz.w64: Do not understand format type: w64
flac: ERROR unknown format
oggenc: ERROR: Input file "itz.w64" is not a supported format
ardour: plays ok, but no encoded formats available in export dialog
cubase sx, wavelab, nuendo in vmware: wont launch
samplitude in vmware: nothing happens
soundforge8 installer in WINE: wont launch
my vmware trial expired, and i didnt get to trying foobar2000 or soundforge8 in vmware,
but even if they did work, the audio would have to be sent over a samba connection at a
few mb/second..if samba didnt choke on the >2gb files to begin with..,.
..so hopefully linux can do this seemingly simple audio task..any ideas?

ecasound -i foo.w64 -o foo.ogg
You need to have libsndfile, lame and vorbis-tools installed in addition
to ecasound (see http://eca.cx for more info plus links).

There's a kind of user blind spot, due to ecasound being a command-line app.
People only tend to think of trying it if they know it or specifically prefer
command-line tools. This is why I have pushed for ecasound -c to have a menu
entry (under Debian at least) and I'm now trying to think up a suitable icon
or two to go with it. Experienced users tend to know where their tools are
and don't mind, possibly even like the fact that it comes in a plain brown
wrapper. The software and documentation are wonderful, but it doesn't leap
off the shelf at you.
Several Linux Audio packages lack icons, so I'm happy to coordinate efforts to
create / find them. Unfortunately I'm not much of an artist, so I thought I
might mention this here in case there are any GIMP/Blender experts lurking on
the list who would be interested in contributing. I'm currently open to
requests from other developers who know that they don't have any suitable
images in their source code. I'm also happy to receive pointers to other
icons that I'm likely to have missed or suitably convertible images.
I am prepared to coordinate farming the icons out for distribution - any
suggestions on how to make them all available to all Linux Audio Users, as
well as DeMuDi (excepting the few DeMuDi-specific icons I have done) will be
gratefully received. While I'm at it, thanks to all the Authors, Developers
and Maintainers who have responded so positively so far. I understand how
much this may seem like a side-issue.

Hi Tim. Thanks for the good kick up the butt. It prompted me to work on my
desktop icons again. I picked up a nice little icon for zynaddsubfx off of
Slackware 10.0 which has brightened up FC1 & FC2's desktop, as it only had a
sheet of paper with a big orange ? . Hydrogen installed without a menu entry,
and I hate to admit it but have only just found Kmenuedit. Doh. That ones on
the desktop now on Slackware 10.0. Bit of a problem with Firefox on FC2. It
starts from a shell script in the home directory and Kmenuedit didn't want to
know. But creating a launcher from the desktop has dealt with that. Next
step, and the one your talking about is making icons from scratch with the
Gimp, for fweelin,Swami,amsynth,and the list goes on. I havn't worked with
the Gimp before but am willing to have a go for the sake of desktop
aesthetics. I'm attaching the zynaddsubfx icon,courtesy of Slackware
10.0.Nigel.

Hi,
As I said to Tim privately, the best route to achieve high quality icons
that can be reused and rendered in a variety of formats and sizes is to
have a vector master. This allows also to combine easily various parts
of different icons, etc...
Look at this tutorial:

So I would use inkscape or sodipodi to make the icon and then export it
and render it, resize it , etc... with gimp: having an svg vector
master of the icon is essential to avoid duplication of effort and to
get something that can be scaled without loosing quality (ie. gnome
supports svg for icons, and they can be resized at will)
The very difficult task is to make something that looks good at 16x16,
32x32, 64x64, etc... while preserving its intelligibility.
And I agree that good icons are very important.

The current list of applications for which icons would be desirable AFAIA is:
brutefir, ceres3, dbmix, denemo, ecasound, ecawave, freebirth, jackeq,
songwrite, soundtracker, timidity and tkeca. This is by no means a definitive
list.
Respect and thanks to any maintainers & authors who have recently uploaded
icons. Pd, Gem, Glame, Ripperx, Jamin and Timemachine are all suitably
attired now.

if you have erik de castro lopo's libsndfile on your system, you also
have sndfile-convert, which can convert w64 into normal wavs. those can
be used with oggenc.

in case you need to resample, also get his sample rate conversion
library at http://www.mega-nerd.com/SRC/.

mhWaveEdit can do it, if you have libsndfile and lame/oggenc installed.. Just open the
file and save as something.ogg (or something.mp3)..
