Hi folks,
I'm looking for a good Live CD/DVD for music production.
Some of the things I'd like to see:
* preferably based on Ubuntu
* decent hardware detection
* recent versions of ZynAddSubFx, Guitarix, Bristol,
QJackCtl, Rosegarden, Seq24, Hydrogen, QAMix, QSynth
(but see the next point)
* ability to add custom packages after booting;
a build environment that lets me compile stuff
residing on an USB stick would probably be
the best solution
There seem to be quite a few well-maintained Live distributions
geared towards audio production out there, but I don't really
want to download and test each one, so I'd like to hear about
your experiences with them.

Don't know how recent it is, but I have ArtistX 0.7 on my
synthesizer/effects box laptop. I think it's based on Ubuntu (maybe
UbuntuStudio, even) but packs in practically everything. I'm not sure it
comes with everything properly configured out-of-the-box - if it has a
realtime kernel, it doesn't seem to be working as one.
I couldn't get 64Studio v2.x to install. I initially thought it was a
bad burn, but reburning didn't fix it. Then I thought it was a bad
download, and redownloaded, but that didn't fix it, either. Then I
noticed somewhere that there was a bug about installing it from DVD ...
so I stopped bothering. I might try v3 when it comes out of beta.
I had UbuntuStudio on the laptop, but it hosed itself when when it tried
to update itself to whatever the next newer version of Ubuntu was.
I'm thinking of trying Gentoo on it, it's supposed to be very very
configurable and optimizable. The synth/effects laptop doesn't have a
lot of memory and only a 2.8GHz Celeron. (Of course, someone on the list
is using an EEEPC 1000 for the same purposes, so maybe the hardware
shouldn't matter!)
I found a utility that can turn live Linux ISOs into bootable flash
drives, it works effectively, but not very useful if you need to install
from the flash drive. If the Live Linux CD/DVD is setup to install, it
will look for the CD/DVD in the machine's CD drive and never even sees
the install files sitting there on the flash drive.
My present main music/audio work system is running Debian Lenny without
real time kernel, but I do mostly MIDI work with it and let the outboard
equipment generate the sounds.

is using an EEEPC 1000 for the same purposes, so maybe the hardware
shouldn't matter!)
AVLinux is my current platform; Sabayon is also very good (very polished
and reliable), and it is Gentoo-based. Haven't found a realtime kernel
for Sabayon or Gentoo yet.

Gentoo real-time kernels are in the pro-audio overlay. Not sure how up
to date they are. I think I'm running something like
rt-sources-2.6.29-something as the vanilla 2.6.30 kernel.org kernel
didn't seem to like my chipset. Go figure....
Anyway, they are there, and...small rant... ;-) ;-)
Why in the heck does *anyone* complain about not finding rt-kernels?
The source is publicly available and it's very straight forward to
build kernel source once you get in the swing. There isn't any magic
to building the rt-kernel and truly it's no more difficult than
building the vanilla kernel if folks have done that.

- I can't do it - I never studied computer related anything
- I have other priorities, I make music, not software, and I'm much
older than you so I don't have the time again.
It sums up to the question: is it necessary to build your own guitar
in order to know how to play one?
I personally run AVLinux and it 'just works', including the rt-kernel
that comes with it. So I also don't understand the issue.

Beats me..I suppose they're searching for a ready-to-run binary most
of the time so that is why they enquire whether there's any, before
they go build their own :)

Jurgen makes a good point. Not every musician on this list has the
knowledge, time or inclination to build a kernel. So if ready-to-go
packages are not available or are hard to find, the (s)he can be expected to
either move away from linux or (preferably!!) 'complain' and get some help.

non-distro specific web page somewhere that goes through this for
audio kernels. I suspect that Fernando already has this somewhere for
CCRMA. Possibly leverage from that?
Personally I don't like distro kernels because distro packagers are
forever adding things to the kernel that aren't tested by the
rt-kernel team and I don't want to deal with those problems.

Good to know. Not true about Gentoo.

And interestingly there is a thread on the rt-sources kernel list just
this morning about bugs in tainted vs non-tainted kernels. Non-tainted
worked fine, tainted failed.

I have used Linux for quite a few years now (when did CorelLinux first
come out?) and AT&T UNIX before that. I'm a rather technical user. I
have NEVER compiled a kernel. *I've never had to.* So your
casually-mentioned-phrase "once you get in the swing" glosses over a
process that may be well beyond the comfort-zone or capability of many
Linux users. (My lovely Linux-using wife would be completely lost from
the start.)
I still don't understand why distros don't routinely include RT kernels
as an option in their repositories.
