Thought I'd share my experience in case it helps anyone who is new to this.
I'm an amateur musician who's used Linux for everyday computing for about 10
years, and recently decided to use my laptop as a tool for composition. I'm
no hacker but reasonably competent at configuring Linux apps.
I use a Toshiba 64-bit laptop running Ubuntu 9.04 (2.6.28-3-rt kernel).
Sound and video hardware in this machine is the usual Intel OEM stuff -
nothing special.
I decided to try out a number of music applications but had a lot of
problems installing/configuring the likes of Rosegarden, MuseScore, and a
few others, and setting up the jack server, minimising latency etc. I tried
all the solutions posted in relevant lists and forums but still found
problems and eventually got fed up - I'd rather spend the time writing
music.
Then I found NtEd. I'm surprised there is little mention of it in the
archives here. I found it to be the only serious composition tool that
installed and ran without any problems, and very easy to use. If you want
to make use of midi, the latest version ( 1.8.0 ) supports creating a score
from playing a midi keyboard. The developer's website and documentation is
comprehensive and well written. So if you are more interested in composing
music than tweaking Linux music apps, I recommend you check out NtEd.

ok, your post brings up a question in my mind: are you using NtEd as
a midi sequencer, or are you composing note-by-note, and using the
notation capabilities after-the-fact?

willing to learn: and musescore has a great appeal in this regard.
However, I'm not able to connect it with external MIDI synthesizers. I
see alsa midi ports but nothing seems to pass through them (tried
with kmidimon). If I select to use the MIDI out in the preferences the
song won't start at all, while with the internal synth all is working
good.
Any hints on this problem?

This happens because KMidimon creates an ALSA Sequencer queue, and ALSA uses
the RTC device for their own sequencer, so mscore finds that it is busy when
tries to open it. The same happens if you start arecordmidi before mscore, or
any other program that uses ALSA sequencer queues.
You can use aseqdump instead of KMidimon to monitor the MIDI events coming
from mscore, because aseqdump doesn't display the event's timestamps so it
doesn't need to use a queue. You can also start MuseScore first, and KMidimon
later. Or tell the ALSA sequencer to use a different timer source by default.
These are not real solutions, only workarounds. The solution would be to
implement an ALSA timer in MuseScore, or even better: use the ALSA sequencer
scheduling services instead of an internal timer.
I would like to contribute with code to solve this, because I like many of the
program features, but the project leader says that he is going to drop ALSA
replacing it with Jack MIDI, so implementing better ALSA support for this
project would be losing the time.

I'm not using NtEd as a midi sequencer. The reason I mentioned JACK and
latency is that a beginner wanting to try out Rosegarden (as I did) will
encounter them. It appears that this will also apply to MuseScore in the
future (see Werner Schweer's posts in this thread).
