The venue where I work has just been given a new Soundcraft Si3 console
(Thank you Harman!).
There is an option card available for this console which provides direct
outs via MADI56 or MADI64. Does anyone know of a piece of supported
hardware that will allow me to record shows on my laptop with Ardour?

Personally I find the MADIface a bit too fragile and too expensive for
its features.
Rick, all RME MADI cards will work right out of the box on linux. For
what you need, you are fine with the stock kernel drivers.

Yes. For the price of the MADIface you can fit a Shuttle with the PCIe
MADI card. My preferred setup, btw. Fits nicely in a carrying bag, just
connect one (or two, if you want redundancy) shuttles and control them
from your android phone :)

true, OTOH if you tape/glue/screw/weld it into a rack case together
with a Micstasy or two and secure the cable with some tie wraps it's
OK. And it *does* provide 64 channels. But I agree the price is
excessive.

Yes. I tend to dislike using laptops for any serious work, but
they are of course convenient.
And a big part of the problem is indeed the mechanical side of
the audio interfaces. Look at Cardbus, Expresscard, Firewire,...
it's all so fragile. The cards stick out, moving the laptop could
be enough to break something. As could someone pulling or just
moving the cable accidentally. Firewire connectors are so tiny
that the weight and/or stiffness of the cable is enough to break
them, or the socket, or the PCB supporting the socket.
SC optical interfaces (as used for MADI) would be nice on laptops
- the cable is light and flexible, and if anything happens it's
very likely the cable that will be broken. Which is much less of
a problem than a laptop that you probably can just throw away.

I had a box in t hat general form factor back in the day. Somewhere from a 286
to a 486. Mono screen of a purplish hue. It served me well for a long time
but not as an audio box.

its not pure fiction. there have been at least a half-dozen companies
in the english-speaking world alone that have tried to sell
audio-centric computers. its a niche market, and in general they don't
last very long. here's one that died and has been resurrected, for
example:

there's not a lot of money to be made in this market, let alone the
tiny corner of it that would run linux on it. imagining that there is
a notable market for a custom built unit using non-off-the-shelf cases
or components ... now we're talking fiction.
