i've been through most of this - I haven't tried manually using a slower
speed though... k i'll try that
Sometimes recording at slower speed will make up for failings in you CDRW
and *also* for less-than-stellar CDRs. I only make coasters (at 24x) if I
use dime-store CDRs.
Also, the CD-Writing howto has all the info you need for writing CDs,
although it sounds like you've done your homework.

Check with cdrecord -scanbus to be sure your
scsi cd devices.
Read man cdrecord. Examples at the end will help you.
Check your CD writer maximum write speed. If you are having troubles,
reduce writing speed.
To make a backup to a CD use mkisofs. Read man mkisofs. Check examples
in cdrecord man pages.
To write audio cds try to save just wav files under a directory.
Cdrecord will remove headers. See also cdrecord examples.
A slower speed is... slower... but... It works!.
