Dear all,
This is actually the very first track I made with Linux. Recently I
listened to it again and felt this track deserved some more attention so
I decided to remix it. Originally this track was made with LMMS and I
recorded the vocals with Qtractor. I kept the vocals and parts of the
drumsamples and I also stuck with the bass line for the verse and some
of the effects.
So I loaded all the samples into Hydrogen, recorded all MIDI patterns
with seq24 and inserted the plug-ins I wanted to reuse into Qtractor.
Well, that was my intention actually. I ended up rerecording guitar
parts and added quite some extra samples. Also the number of synths
steadily grew during the process, same for the amount of plug-ins I used.
This is what I came up with, just freshly ran through LinuxDSP's MBC2
(it's an electro-ish track so I compressed the hell out of it):

Stuffs used:
* Yoshimi Analogue Bass running through a C* Pre-amp and the Crossover
Distortion plug-in
* Yoshimi Dubstep (custom patch), I did the cut-off live with an Akai
MPK Mini
* amSynth Synth Strings 1 patch
* SO-666 Feedback Drone LV2 plug-in (LOVE THIS ONE!!! Thanks for this
plug-in Jeremy Salwen!!)
* WhySynth DragonPurr
* MDA Vocoder + Yoshimi Hard Synth
* All guitars (Fender Tele and OLP Music Man) done with Guitarix and the
Redwirez IR Library (http://www.redwirez.com/free1960g12m25s.jsp?ref=home)
* Lots and lots of Calf Compressors and I think every track (about 20)
has a different reverb plug-in (TAP, FreeVerb). I also used quite some
Calf Vintage Delays for the guitars and the SO-666. And 2 or 3 Calf
Phasers. Oh yeah, and the SC3 plug-in to duck the SO-666.
* Most drum samples are from the LMMS sample set, I decided to re-use
those. The crashes are from the GSCW2 Hydrogen kit.
* Last but not least, I added a little Glockenspiel in the bridge. First
I wanted to use the Glockenspiel of the SSO library but that specific
set of samples is not so great so I drove to our rehearsal room to pick
up our drummer's little Glockenspiel, mic-ed it with the first mic I
could find (an AT2020) and got it on hdd within a few minutes.
Basically I used Qtractor as a mixer, Hydrogen to host the samples and
seq24 for the MIDI patterns and automation of Qtractor. Works like a
charm. Hope you like it. Feedback is always appreciated!

track has to 'compete' against totally flatted out stuff next saturday I
kind of overdid the final compression.

Thanks for listening and giving feedback. The distortion on the vocals
in the verse was done intentionally, so is the distortion on the
bassline of the verse. But I'll upload a less compressed version, I
guess it's a bit too much because now it seems indeed that some parts
that are supposed to sound distorted do so because of the final
compression. I really wanted to finish this track, it got later and
later, the ears got more and more tired. I should've done the mixing,
then sleep over it and then do the final compression.

Very good track. I actually like the distortion on the vocals. Some parts
seem to bounce around a little out of rhythm with the rest of the track and
it pulls me out a bit. However, the vocals are solid the groove is fun and
the guitar parts are spot on. Great track.

Hello Daniel,
Thanks! I think it's the vocals of the chorus that are a little bit off
timing. They were already from the beginning but I didn't want to redo
them, it's a remix after all. Also the wobble of dubsteppy bassline of
the chorus has a different time signature than the the rest. That
sneaked in by coincidence but I left it like that because it did fit
with the track.

Nice! Esp like the combination of demo-scene sound and a good use of the
wobble bass! Good hook in the chorus too...

All that rework produced a track I really enjoyed. Listening to it
through headphones. It doesn't sound over-distorted to me. Maybe less
compression, just to give it a bit more dynamics. The guitars and the
vocals are great!

Hello Dave,
Guitarix is just awesome, it can produce really good cleans. Haven't
tried gx_head yet but my guess is that it's even better. And now this
track is finished I can move on with the next one. I have a nice tune
based on a PHASEX riff lying around but because PHASEX doesn't use JACK
Transport the arpeggios/delays go out of sync. But apparently
phasex-dev's JACK Transport is stable enough to be usable so I can
continue working on that tune.

While compressing the lead vocals of the verse I was like, what if I
compress them ridiculously. And I quite liked the effect, it's finer
grained than a distortion or overdrive. I did experiment with those but
it all got too hefty, too degraded. I like it that it starts to saturate
when the vocal part gets louder. I did spent quite some time running the
vocals through zita-at1. I now know exactly how this nifty program works
but wasn't satisfied with the results. Not that zita-at1 is not good,
it's excellent, but somehow the autotuned parts didn't fit in the track.
And I did use a vocoder in the bridge (thanks David Robillard for
porting the mda plug-ins to LV2!) , maybe I should've used that
elsewhere too but I can easily create some extra seq24 patterns.

retro-1990s industrial flashback.

Thank you Rui, I'm honored :) Qtractor is excellent for doing things
like this as it can handle basically all plug-in frameworks that are
available and enables you to automate them with MIDI. And the flexible
routing possibilities are great too. It just works well for me, pivotal
part of my workflow.

samples is not so great so I drove to our rehearsal room to pick up our
drummer's little Glockenspiel, mic-ed it with the first mic I could find (an
AT2020) and got it on hdd within a few minutes.
Basically I used Qtractor as a mixer, Hydrogen to host the samples and
seq24 for the MIDI patterns and automation of Qtractor. Works like a charm.

Haven't trackers come a long way since MED? Seems there are more
people creating electronica with Renoise under Linux than just about
any other app, which is kinda funny as its non-free but then also not
that weird as lots of us are ex-Amigans who got cut their computer
music teeth on Protracker, *MED etc. I understand your woes about
Renoise but its surely in the 'Top 10 commercial apps most likely to
be open sourced' - I'd like to think so anyway :)

I'm just gonna say this, then shut up:
I didn't use trackers as a kid, an eventhough I has played a little with
soundtracker before renoise, it took quite some time to get used to the
tracker aspect, and to be honest I might have preferred a piano-roll
interface. The reason I use renoise (I suspect the same is true for most
linux renoise users) is that it's 1) rock steady 2) very rounded off and
3) very eagerly developed.
Actually for any music app I ever used I can't think of any that beats
renoise in *any* of these areas.

free betas that expire in 3 months but there's always a new beta out
before that. once i realised that it is the ultimate app for me i was
happy to pay that low money. actually i would pay 100€ if it would be
GPLd.

Hm, interesting piece. I can see, what one of my predecessors - in posts -
meant by commercial or professional. It is that, in it's genre. But for my
taste, even in this genre it is a bit repetitive. And where have the melodic
vocal parts gone? I mean, they are still fashionable, are they not? :-)
Still well done and if you have some melodic chorus or bridge and perhaps a
few more words, I might actually grow to really like it as one balance for my
usual prog and baroque. :-)

Qtractor cannot sequence/loop patterns independently from one another,
it's not a step sequencer like seq24. Of course I could've imported all
the .mid files into Qtractor or done all the sequencing in Qtractor but

would've been less flexible.

Are the mixer strips in qtractor midi controllable?
Yes they are, basically everything is MIDI controllable in Qtractor
(mute, solo, panning, volume, plug-in parameters). Together with my
BCF2000 and BCR2000 it really is a powerful mixing tool. BCF2000 for the
mixing and BCR2000 for the plug-in parameters. I've programmed the
automation for the fade-out in seq24.

imported all the .mid files into Qtractor or done all the sequencing
in Qtractor but that would've taken me a lot more time and the
