Hey folks, I'm wondering if people can let me know which pad/knob
controllers they know to work well if you're going to use them in home
brewed linux rigs. IE, which ones can be configured flexibly to send
whatever I want from the pads and knobs, and won't turn out to be kinda
useless if I'm not using commercial software with them.

most OSC-sending devices can be reprogrammed to send whatever it
necessary. they'd be pretty useless without that, because there are
more or less zero standardized OSC messages. the set you need to
control ableton is totally different from the set you need to control
<foobar>. however, in a number of cases, the reprogramming tool runs
only on proprietary OS platforms.

For what its worth, for
midi, I have a Novation Remote Zero SL and it
allows extensive patch editing from the device itself, and allows
backup/restore via SYSEX. Unfortunately, it's use is very limited to me,
as I can't use the on-board functions (can't see the little screens),
but it does seem to work ootb on Linux. Obviously, you can't use the
provided helper software, but, at least, I believe you can do
practically everything from the device itself.

I'm using a BCR2000, works well, sends midi, I stick with the default
controller assignment and handle things in my client (either chuck or
renoise).
Nothing beats the Lemur, although almost the same (maybe even more) can
be done with a tablet (samsung galaxy running android would be my bet) +
either something you grab from the market and customize or hack
yourself. I found it kind of interesting that the lemur seems to be out
of production and the software is now available on ios (suggesting
people should buy an ipad + the app and forget about the lemur)...

It's available for android (free beer), testing on my htc desire
suggests that multi touch needs android 3. I'm running 2.3.7 and multi
touch is nor working unfortunately :-(
Editor available for linux (written in java) testing this ATM...
