Hi all.
What are people using to play FLAC files?
Seems like every player I've tried so far does not reliably play them
(Amarok, Songbird, etc).

Hi!
I use mplayer (there's also gmplayer for the graphic). For a while now, it
plays them reliably, even the time display works quite fine. Only at the last
two seconds or so, it sometimes does funny things. But I can live with that.
and what about alsaplayer or xine? I think they both support it. Xine at
least should do so and it's been around for a while now, as well.

FLACs play fine here in Kaffeine using the Xine backend. They also play
in mplayer.
Perhaps one of your sound libs needs updating?

Cool. Thanks for the replies, guys.
I guess what I find odd is that both of the players I mentioned purport to
play FLAC files but they seem to be buggy at best.
Why is FLAC audio proving to be such a difficult format to reliably support?
I guess I should mention that the player I'm searching for should have some
sort of playlist functioniality as well. Songbird is great in that respect!
MPlayer does not, correct?

Hi Aaron!
I can't use gmplayer, but I think it has some kind of playlist support. At
least I know that mplayer can read a good deal of playlist formats, like in
m3u or asx. But I think in the GUI you also have some basic playlist creation
support.
Still I know, that mplayer is reliable enough, to be preferred by the
slimdevices system, which uses some commercial player-devices, which also
prefer FLAC.

MPlayer does not, correct?
MPlayer does support playlists (< and > to navigate through songs..),
yet it Mplayer itself has no GUI (i.e. it's a teminal command) There are
front-ends though.
I guess that players are much of a personal taste. I do enjoy vlc for
certain features, Totem for others and mplayer to - for example -
quickly play files when jack is on.

Maybe it depends on the Phonon backend used (Xine vs Gstreamer) and if
pulseaudio is activated or not. In my case Xine backend without
Pulseaudio works fine.

Have you tried Ario? Best graphical client I've tried

I also play FLACs without any issues using mpd, and I think it's far and away the best
player for linux.

I tried Sonata as well, the search also was annoying for me, but for
another reason. It uses a rather short timeout after you stop typing to
start searching. If you don't type like hell it just starts to search,
and with a lot of songs this search takes some time and makes the whole
thing unresponsive.
it's written in python luckily, so even I managed to at least increase
the timeout and just restart it. Hacking other functionality should be
relatively simple as well.

Ah, the usual Linux music player run-around... Lately I've found
myself enjoying the simplicity of MOC (http://moc.daper.net/). It
automatically uses Jack if it's running, and if not goes directly for
ALSA. It's terminal/curses based, very simple and lightweight with a
Midnight-Commander-like interface. Being able to ssh to it without
X-forwarding is nice.

gmusicbrowser, using gstreamer as the backend although it can use
others such as mplayer. It has some nice as in useful features too.
I decided to put all my music onto it after ripping to flac first. It
got me to love my music all over again. :)
