one of my continuing quests on linux is trying to find
a suitable mp3
player to ... play my mp3's. what i need is something like amarok (my
favourite), rhythmbox or muine that has multiple output interfaces;
intuitive mp3 browser/library; cover art display; slick interface; and
system tray/plugin support.
I would like something better, too. I've just been using XMMS, which
is convenient because it has the automatic JACK output plugin. But it
is ugly as hell. The stupid fixed bitmap size is about the size of my
thumb on my high res LCD, so I have to always run in double size, with
all the fonts bumped up as well. It is somewhat buggy and unstable as
well. (Though it crashes less often and opens more file types with
less effort on my part than the few other programs I have tried.) I
am looking at the ones you listed. Are they much more beta, though?
I want something that doesn't crash, has a GUI that works on more than
just the developer's screen, can play all file types effortlessly
and... well... is easy to use. I guess that's too much to ask for a
linux app...

If you run the package from a terminal you might get some error messages
which can help resolve the problem.

For years I'm now using Alsaplayer, which still is the most stable one
for me. The only thing missing is sortable playlist, which is really a
bad thing to miss, however its combination of ease of use, simple
interface, stability and leanness is without par, IMO. (I don't use
KDE nor Gnome, so I don't want a player relying on it.) And think of
it: Alsaplayer is so solid, that it wasn't even updated in months and
parts of it in years!!! ;)

You mean development has stopped altough alsaplayer isn't feature-complete?

And: You don't hav to use aRts or KDE to use JuK or Amarok, they just need
kdelibs installed. Me personally prefers JuK since I need/want a good
playlist more than fancy design...

... and I'd need to load those libraries, which will eat up my limited
RAM. I have Gtk loaded, and Gtk is all an mp3 player needs IMO. But
each his own.
(Actually I'm also using mpg123 and ogg123 a lot, too.)

It doesn't really miss a sortable interface. It's just not included in
the gui, as far as I can see. If you get a copy of the source and cd
down to the folder examples. There you'll find sort.c. Just do a:
gcc -o sort_ap sort.c `pkg-config alsaplayer --cflags --libs`
and you'll be able to sort the alsaplayer. At least in
alsaplayer-0.99.76.
to sort you just: sort_ap [aAlLtTyYnNcCfFgGpP]
ex. "sort_ap a" will sort the list by artist in descending
order. Documented in the code :-), at app/Playlist.cpp
Now someone just need to make a bunch of clickable buttons in the gui
to match this and "alls well".
