Using Unity 2D or 3D? 2D is supposed to use less.
My suggestion: drop Unity, use XFCE instead.
Maybe it helps when you clean up the cache after
Ardour crashes?
sudo sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

@David: In Ubuntu 12.10, Unity 2D doesn't exist anymore. And thanks for the
suggestion, but I actually doesn't want to drop Unity for XFCE - I really
like the look and feel of Unity... But that's a discussion for another time
:)
Right now, I have re-installed the FGLRX driver... Looks like the
performance issue is gone, even after an Ardour crash, and I apparently
don't get xruns.... I'll keep you posted!

I'm with you on Unity - best desktop UI I've used since I had to give
up on RISC OS in '98! :-)
However, I'd question why you're using Ubuntu 12.10? I now stick with
LTS editions, and treat the others as what they really are - betas for
the LTS's. With the low-latency kernel and using the KXStudio ppa's
for most audio stuff, this seems a pretty solid and usable setup,
given that I use it as a general purpose setup with audio capabilities
rather than a purely audio platform.

Are you using plain vanilla Ubuntu or Ubuntu Studio? If you want to do
audio & video work, you should use Ubuntu Studio, the stock kernel
will work correctly with jackd if you want to use the realtime
scheduling

Ubuntu Studio Quantal ships with Xfce4.
I've got an Ubuntu Studio Quantal install and issues with some "desktop"
apps.
Right now I set up Ubuntu Quantal, while I kept Ubuntu Studio Quantal.
Yes, audio is ok for Ubuntu Studio, but e.g. Evolution fails, however,
it's always possible to install the studio meta packages to any other Ubuntu install.
It's the same for the kernel-lowlatency and even building a kernel-rt isn't hard
to do.
Pff, Unity IMO is the most worse desktop environment I've ever seen.
I suspect that somebody who likes Unity, would have a very unusual audio production
work-flow,
so any recommendation might be counterproductive regarding to the OP's needs.

... using Unity does lead to an unusual work-flow. That doesn't mean
that an unusual work-flow is bad.
You do the value judgement, please don't put misrepresented words in my
