Folks,
Is there such a thing as a 'generic' MIDI keyboard with a LCD that
can display info retrieved from Linux synths apps ? Such a keyboard
interfaces directly with a Linux box runnign various sound-producing
apps. The controls on the keyboard itself can choose between Qsynth,
Zyn, etc... It could eventually even choose which soundfont in QSynth
or which sound in Zyn.
Does such a keyboard exist ?
Just asking ;-)

That would make a device that has way too many features.
Nevertheless. it'd be great. Even more so if the communication
protocol is Open Source And Standard. A MIDI keyboard that actually
interacts with apps running on the workstation. I think the idea is
simple and good. Why put out a Liostracs Linux MIDI keyboard with KDE
when KDE is already running on a computer in the same room ?

Hi!
I think if you're just looking for a kind of controller, the answer is:
there isn't. But there is a device by Lionstracks, which has a kind of
linux-=system built-in, with at least a linux-sampler and some vst-plugins. I
don't know about the rest.
But besides, that, I think, it's just use a normal MIDI-keyboard and keep
your screen at hand. Or know what you are doing. Program your tools up-front.

Of course. But then it'd be nice to have a keyboard/controller whose
little display can actually interface with Linux apps. It would be
even nicer to have a protocol defined for such a purpose. But then,
maybe it's not possible as MIDI could very well not permit this kind of
thing (I don't know much about MIDI details).

Nop, MIDI is most certainly not the right kind of protocol for this purpose.
I thought: perhaps a combination of MIDI and USB. You could transfer all the
MIDI-stuff via MIDI and the more complex app interface output and
configurations via USB. But I'm not aware of anything like it.
Do you know if the windows world has anything like it?

On the USB track.. there is a program called xhkeys which allows
programming particular functions to any single keypress on the
(qwerty) keyboard. This could be useful for launching particular
apps, and loading patches with an extended keyboard (like the
cherry Linux keyboard for example).
With a standard midi keyboard, it is simple to change presets for
soundfonts etc.

You could actually do a lot of what he wants via SysEx, but you'd
need control over the firmware on the keyboard in order to get
it done. I don't know of any MIDI controllers with open
firmware.
I think the closest we'll get in the foreseeable future (without
spending 4 grand on a full-blown Lionstracs workstation that
already has a Linux PC inside it) is some kind of preset
configurations for common MIDI controllers, templates or cheat
sheets for those controllers, and maybe even some kind of MIDI
middleware app that translates particular MIDI controller
messages into instructions for controlling different Linux audio
apps, maybe loading "presets" through LASH.
When I have some free time I hope to set something like that up
for my PCR-30, maybe not the last part but certainly the first
two, and obviously I'll post whatever I do.
