hmmm
lsmod show gameport with the ens1371 (an oldie but goody I found n the trash
and put in to have SOMETHING for audio for the Linux--my dman2044 is not
supported. Under windows, eht ens1371 has a wave table GS-subset as well.)
Since I do not use the gameport, how might I disable it and see if this was
blocking the mpu401?
Actually, I have no mpu401 device. The target is another oldie, a Yamaha
sw60xg ISA card which is simply an XG sound generator. It sits on a port, no
IRQ, no DMA, no PNP, nada. The system does not know it's there, not Windows,
not Linux. When W2k came out and Yamaha had no driver for the card, they
recommended using the W2K mpu401 driver until. So I tried this with Linux and
it has worked 100% until 2.6.12.

My experience with 2.6.12 chimes with other users: It's got problems. :(
I read that 2.6.13 comes with Ingo Molnar's latency patches and better
timing resolution. Perhaps this is the OTB audio-ready kernel we've been
waiting for ?

Not exactly. Like all kernel releases since the RT kernel project began
(2.6.8 or so), it contains some incremental fixes from the RT kernel,
but the main parts of the RT patch (IRQ threading, fully preemptible
kernel) aren't in 2.6.13.

Nope, WORSE timing resolution (by default). The default timer interrupt
frequency has changed from 1000HZ to 250HZ which degrades the resolution
of sleep(), poll(), select() from 1ms to 4ms.
Linus has made it clear that he's not budging on this. So make sure you
set CONFIG_HZ to 1000 or else 2.6.13 will make the jitter in your MIDI
sequencer's timer 4x worse.
Perhaps this is the OTB audio-ready kernel we've

Well the kernel has been audio ready for several releases, it's just
userspace that needs to catch up.
I don't know why people are complaining about 2.6.12, works fine for me.
Unless they are having problems with USB audio, but this isn't a
regression, AFAICT it never worked very well.

I'm starting to complain about it because I'm running a relatively low spec P3
+ 310MB RAM on a crap soundcard, which used to work perfectly on the
2.4.27-multimedia kernel. I can only assume that the 2.6 kernel uses
significantly more resources. I also remember that the 2.4 kernel wasn't
really any good for audio until .18 and I know it's not something that is
prioritised in kernel development. So I'm not entirely surprised. Still it's
good enough to motivate me to learn how to compile my own. We're also
starting to see P4s on the recycling horizon, so I may be able to upgrade the
hardware soon. :)

But what "doesn't work"? Your description is way too vague to
constitute a useful bug report.

I know. I wasn't explicitly asking for help. I'm still rather fried from the
weekend. I have recently re-installed the whole system and have a couple of
other issues (possibly PEBKAC errors ;) which are confusing the matter. If it
would be useful to you for the purposes of identifying 2.6.12 issues, I will
provide some proper information. Otherwise I will carry on with what I'm
doing and ask for help when I'm really stuck. The work you are doing is
highly valuable, I don't want to waste your time.

Please start another thread with a DETAILED description of the problem
(see the kernel bug reporting guidelines) as this has nothing to do with
the mpu401 issue.
