Hello
I am an Ubuntu 12.04 user in an 7yr old laptop.
At this moment I urge a hardware improvement for my work which is: sound
synthesis and processing controlled by external data via USB (kinect sensor
and customa arduino based sensors) and WiFi (osc data).
So i have to make an investment in a powerful laptop with the proper
configuration for my needs which could be translated into:
* very powerful processor for the dsp algorithms
* 3+ usb ports (not hubs) so i can connect the external sensors and an
external soundcard
* a good wireless card that would not use any resources from the main
processor
* a video card that would not interfere with the main processor
Although I think i know the basic needs, I can not name the manufacturers
or models of the processor, board, video and wireless card that would make
my system work the best.
It would be of great help if you could help me choose these elements based
on your positive experience on any of them and even more it would be great
if you could recommend a specific commercial laptop that could have these
features/elements already packed.

good at all. It seems to be very sensitive to the angle at which you
strike a key; strike it just a little off center or at a bit of an angle
and it doesn't pick up the keystroke. Its keyboard is about 2/3 the
width of my favorite clicky IBM AT keyboard. The spacing of the keys
seems just a bit off, it's very easy to strike between the keys ...
There are a lot of complaints about the keyboard on the System76 support
forum, which I didn't look at before I bought the machine.
It would be of great help if you could help me choose
these elements
based on your positive experience on any of them and even more it would
be great if you could recommend a specific commercial laptop that could
have these features/elements already packed.
When I was looking to replace my previous laptop, folk on the list here
frequently recommended Lenovo laptops.

Hey guys thanks for your answers.
I have taken a very close look at the System76 and Think Penguin laptops
and they seem to be good candidates.
The problem about those is that I live in Europe and there is a high tax
for overseas computers purchases.
In this context, an extra question for this post is if there are any europe
based companies packing up robust linux laptops. I have made my search but
have not found any companies of the sort of S76 or TP and it is a bit
frustrating.

BTO doesn't explicitly support Linux but my BTO works great with Linux,
not a single unsupported component. BTO uses Clevo housings (I think
System76 does so too) with a modular approach for the internal
components. This allows you to select the components you wish. Another
big pro for me is their customer service. I once had a small issue with
the keyboard, drove up to their office and had it replaced within 45
minutes for free. Now try that with the big players.

Continuing this thread of a laptop config, is there any advice on either of
these wireless card's performance with linux and specifically with their
possible interference with audio:
intel dual band wireless-AC 7260+bluetooth
and
intel single band wireless-N 7260+bluetooth

Two extra questions: Have you managed to eliminate the xruns from the
onboard sound?
Is it possible to shut down the bluetooth and not the wireless to avoid
this bottleneck you mention?

I can't help with the blue tooth (batteries annoy me), but the one sure
way to use WIFI with no xruns is to use a WIFI "range extender" with an
ethernet port. Often the repeater can be turned off. These are basically
an AP in client mode, but cheaper. There are some APs that will do client
mode, but more that will not. I always look for WIFI APs in the garbage as
they generally work just fine. I use a range extender here for my son's
computer and it is very stable. The only problem with the one I have is
that it is AC only. If you need battery powered (I hate batteries) look
for one that uses a wall wart and replace that with a battery pack. Though
I would assume you laptop gets AC at a gig anyway.
I think that WIFI cards have followed the same path as modems did in years
past, they started as a separate unit, but have started offloading
processing to the main CPU so the WIFI card itself can be cheaper. To
research the good ones, the place to start might be with the
driver/module. With modems I had to go external, it may be the same way
with wifi. The upside of external is that one extender (mine needs a
switch) can deal with a number of boxes that need network.

That's exactly the card that was originally shipped with my BTO notebook
and that caused me some headaches to tame. Even if the 7260 series would
have issues too I'd go for the 7260-AC variant and not an N variant so
you're set for any future wireless router upgrades ;)

Oh well scratch that plan then :)
I think I'll get an intl anyways, as they seem quite good for wifi
itself. Really the only reason for BT would have been for using it
with a mouse.

Actually reading what you wrote, I wonder if the onboard card problem
is something else. Does the Intel BT also interfere with USB low
latency audio, which is the datum that I was interested in :)

Yes it most certainly does with the 6235 Centrino card. I fear same goes
for the 7260 cards but to be sure I'll test it.
