Can anyone suggest a couple of ALSA-safe cards

In other words, if I play back a 44.1khtz CD that the

through to the SPDIF output.
Any card with a CMI8738 or CMI8768 chip. The analog quality,
especially that of the 8738, is lousy, but they can do bit-
perfect playback and capture of digital data.
If that includes CMI8738-MC6 you can get it on e.g. a Terratec Aureon
5.1 PCI for approximately 20€. It works well for SPDIF out here, haven't
tried input.
