Two little things to tell everyone.
First, I finally got my copy of the February issue of Sound on Sound.
The Linux article is there, and I was very impressed with it. Plus,
this issue has a great how-to on micing drums for studio recording.
The surprise was the copy of Home Recording I picked up on a whim
today, because it has an article on DIY surround sound. In the back,
under the Computer Central heading, is an article called "The Other
Operating System," by Thad Brown. I'll give you three guesses which one
he's talking about. :-)
It's a very positive article, saying that he ultimately thinks that
Linux will be a serious competitor to MS and Apple for music
production. The article also mentions a company called Digigram who has
released drivers for their audio hardware under an Open Source license
(does anybody know anything about Digigram?). He does say, though, that
there seems to be no real replacement in the works for the likes of
ProTools and Cubase, so I think somebody needs to point him to Ardour
and Rosegarden.
Just thought you all would like to know. :-)

Personally, I think the important thing would be to come up with a
killer app like Nuendo or just a nice stable, emacs style, extensible
sequencing environment {Or, maybe convince Minnetonka {Their surround
sound thing would be an excellent base.} or Cakewalk to port} Plugins
and VST/VSTi are most important in my mind... that's the strongest, most
rapidly progressing thing on windows... It follows UNIX philosophy...
makes even more sense in linux {consider the type of development that
goes on in linux as well {windows users have done wonders with vst.}}
It'd be great to get a sort of generalized plugin based environment
along the likes of Creamware's stuff going. {like the functionality of
pd/gem with a timeline and softsynths/ladspa/vst plugins. ...That, being
open source, could be remade in the image of whichever artist wishes to
move into it. It's an environment...}
I think linux's real strong point is all of the bizarre research
environments and experimental software that's available. I also think
that's {coding sound} going to become much more important. It makes for
a good artistic environment at any rate.
Considering the fact that the development trend seems to be towards
crossplatform/platform independent stuff... the idea that OpenStep and
OSX seem to be getting along so brilliantly {I do wish they'd port final
cut pro or avid dv}, that there's a VST server, LADSPA and so many
really nifty projects going... I think the difference amongst platforms
in the future is... there won't be any {platforms} that everything will
be modular... more unixy... built out of plugins and tools and scripts
and the internet.
:} My advice... buy Redhat. {Maybe FCP... Avid.}

editor". Since I haven't got to compile ardour yet, I don't know about the
editor compared to Audacity, sweep, snd.
Is it worth compiling just for the audio editor?

well, yes, it's still not easy to get a useful ardour running.
cvs commits happen most days, frequently with major changes.
I haven't built it in a while and don't know a good cvs date to pull down.
you also have to be sure you have a recent jackd installed
and that your system can deal with high-priority low-latency audio
in general.

It's moving out of alpha and into beta. About two
weeks ago the main developer, Paul Davis, announced on
a flier for the recent NAMM show that a stable release
would be available within a couple months.
I believe that Ardour, for people like us--advocates
of open source and freedom, will be superior to the
other products like Cubase.
Several months ago, I did produce a commercial 18 song
job using Ardour. It was very difficult because of the
stage of development but I did it to prove to myself
and hopefully others that Ardour is the real thing.
BTW, I selected the job carefully and basically knew
what I'd be up against. I wouldn't recommend anyone
use Ardour for commercial work until they know what
they're getting into.
Ardour development is very rapid. I'd estimate that
there are around five significant CVS updates each
week. A couple hours ago Paul D. announced his
"unoffical" intention to wipe out all bugs on the TODO
list by the end of the weekend. I've got 'ssh -X
root@daddy && ardour' from the studio to my room via
100mb LAN and running inside GDB now and am hoping I
can test some updates. :)

If not, please do. I believe you'll be interested.
Also, there's ecasound which I haven't used but
strongly suspect is another interesting Linux DAW.
There are some folks doing interesting work with
Rosegarden -> jackd -> ardour. I'm not sure how well
it's working but I think they're seeing
alsa_pcm:rosegarden-out_N in the ardour routes. :)
That's interesting enough by itself for me to say,
Yes, I know of something that's as good or better than
Cubase.
pawL, in all fairness, my reaction to the interest in
a linux based Cubase is motivated by the fact that
there are some very interesting Linux based solutions.
I believe anything that's got the advertising
investment of a Cubase that entered the Linux realm
would only harm the efforts of linux audio developers
(LAD) because many users would divert their attention
via product reconiziability. In other words, I think
it would split the user community and probably the
developer community too. Although, it's probably to
late for them to do serious harm because we're very
close to having a stable Ardour which is GPL and if
Steinberg didn't release with GPL everyone would
eventually understand the consequences and would
migrate to the less familiar but superior linux based
product.
Anyway, if I cocked off with my earlier responses, I
am sorry. Thanks for asking a tough question.

Just as if ProTools and Cubase were similar products... :P
ProTools is a mixed proprietary hardware and software bundle. For the
price it costs, I'm sure nobody would be caring of if he's paying or
not licenses for the operating system. In the case of Cubase... well,
it seems a replaceable option, without much pity (sorry to Cubase fans
out there!). ;)

...That would mean platform wars and high school kids beating each
other up in the hallways because someone dares to mention that Nautilus
is better than explorer... and... there would be tons and tons of text
spilt in netwide platform wars over the simple idea that "my editor's
better than your editor" {granted it would be really really pleasant but
it's not going to get any real cooperation going and... once again...
linux will be left with a small percentage of the audio community, folk
will develop prejudices and start to "HATE" poor defenseless software
because of the label on its libraries, development will slow drastically
because of the lack of halfway qualified users {bug report senders, beta
testers, ideas, code snippets, the like...} and because of the fact that
folk will be spending half of their time on-line wading through textual
casualties and sidestepping wordy battles and folk will be ripping each
other off in the "holy" name of competition and no-one will be playing
nice and no one will really benefit aside from rabble rousers and petit
tyrants and it will simply screw the whole thing up for those folk that
really care about it at all.}

Cubase VST owner, I also own an old copy of Logic Audio, and I simply

Not wanting to replace anything. I am just amazed of how UNIX can
perform on sound tasks after trying Mac OS X and CoreAudio, so I am
giving Linux a new try.

Digigram makes sounds cards used by a lot of broadcast radio stations .
They made one of the first cards that could do realtime audio
compression .
The alsa driver is for VX cards , a pcmcia soundcard for laptop pc. May
be alsa drivers for others
digigram products one day ?
