sounding bees,
I use my laptop(linux) to record speech with stereo microphones.
The problem is on
playing sound back using "cat filename
/dev/dsp",
the output from left
speaker is much louder than the right
speaker. The sample file is recorded using "cat /dev/dsp>
filename".
I tried the gain settings in aumix, but the
problem persisted.
The mp3 songs sounds good with xine.
Any suggestions?

Pan is a word used by recording studio geeks. Balance is a word used by hi-fi
geeks.
Pan is used to create a false stereo image. Balance is used when you are
sitting too close to one speaker. Of course, the true audiophile doesn't have
a balance control on their amplifier - instead, they have an armchair bolted
to the floor in the exact centre of the stereo image.

pan, eg in mastering, where you dont (necceserily) want to mix the two
channels, you just want to change the relative lelvels.

It's true you don't have a balance control on a mono amplifier. But you can
pan a stereo track in Audacity...

I've tested this using a stereo track where the right channel had been wiped
using Split Stereo Track, Silence on the right channel, and then Make Stereo
Track.
The track 'Pan' control does not pan the left channel into the right channel,
so with the current behaviour it should really be labelled Balance when on
stereo tracks, and Pan when on mono tracks. Thanks to Steve for making this
clear...
I hope this also helps with the Russian translation! Pan means 'to turn', and
is also used in this sense by photographers. It is derived from the Greek
word panorama, meaning 'the wide view'. So when we use the pan control, it's
as if we are turning, or moving the the musician in the 'wide view' of
stereo.
If it can do mono into stereo then that must be pan
(input split into
more than one output).
We used to fake stereo using Duplicate on a mono track, then Make Stereo
Track, followed by realtive level adjustments and stereo effects - but if you
just need to pan the mono track, the track pan control now does that job.

See, in my mother language (which is Russian) there is only one
word for both english words "pan" and 'balance" and it sounds very
similar to the english word "balance", because it is inherited from
English :-)
So I've just made a typical mistake :-)
