I'm in dire need of a decent pair of headphones for real quality and
comfort long-term listening while working on my music. my current set
are literally falling apart - I've lost count of how many times I've
re-cabled them!
I'm also in need of lightweight earplugs for casual work. So far I've
not found ones that will stay in place :(
Can anyone suggest where I can get these (UK) without it costing an arm
and a leg?

I've noticed that headphones comfort and sound quality is highly
subjective. For 3 years now I've been happy with AKG K240... but I
know some people dislike them. For me they are very comfortable and
the sound is not at all tiring.
(They're not very efficient, which can be a problem if you share a
headphone amp with another more efficient pair of phones... one guy
can hardly hear anything and the other guy's ears are getting
blasted.)

If I'm not mistaken (if I'm not actually thinking of something else), I
believe these phones (actually the modern replicas that are available
today) have been used for years by many sound engineers, especially in
the US. So many albums that people have been hearing over the years were
mixed with the help of such phones - then of course, when you listen
those records on these phones, they sound pretty good.
They've been superseded by newer technology, so nowadays they're pretty
cheap, but still they've been the professional standard for a long time.
If I am mistaken, someone please correct me.

Is an arm and a leg under $130 USD?
I bought a pair of AKG k240 studio semi-open headphones (cans) a few
months ago, and I've been really happy with them.
I'm no expert; they were a huge improvement from anything I've used before.
The sound reproduction is nice. I can hear the (bad) noise my
soundcard/mobo spit out now. They have a very crisp "image"; I have to
look over my shoulder every once in a while, because the noises I hear
sound like they're in my room, not just my head.
They are very comfortable. Every once in a while I have to adjust them
because the top of my head gets itchy, but this is after hours of use.
They're very comfy on my ears, in particular.
They let plenty of sound in, and plenty gets out, too. Not sure if
this is what you want, but I think it's one reason they sound so nice;
no muffling. :)
The worst thing about them is the cable. It's 10 feet long, but the
sheath is very light rubber; I managed to tear it pretty easily (fixed
with electrical tape). It's detachable, but I think the connector is
proprietary.
I haven't had any other problems since then. Again, I'm no expert, but
I would definitely recommend them, they were a great deal.
I bought the k240's on sweetwater.com, they ship free, but only inside
the US. There are plenty of other online retailers though, and these
are popular headphones.

Although I'm a fan of the 240's, I'd like to reiterate my main
point: headphones are highly personal. If you can find any local
shops that will let you try a pair, do that first.
Bring a variety of music you're intimately familiar with.
Barring that, make sure there's a good return policy and that it
applies to headphones.

Must boot quickly -- Ability to turn off hardware autodetection easily highly
desirable.
Must be fairly straight forwards to customise X to run a single app rather
than a window manager.
Prefer a realtime kernel out of the box. Must have working firewire by
default.
Must be relatively straight forwards to build software on or for and package
it.
Basically I am looking to set up a single app box to be used in live
performance. If something goes wrong I want to be able to hit the reset
button and have a working system again in the minimum with no human
interaction other than the grub loading screen.

DEB and RPM based systems. Just install Checkinstall, and type
'checkinstall' instead of 'make install' when you've built the
software.
It will generate a package file automatically.

IIRC all distros include the twm (tiny windows manager) which will give
you as many xterminals to run as many X apps as you want.

I tested, not exactly a distribution, but some program name "autoplayiso",
maybe it can help you, if you want to check out the source code.
This program allow you to create a .iso image with few features, then you
burn a CD and boot with it, what you will get will be ->
1) a gnu/linux window manager very very little (based on LIMP distribution)
2) an mplayer with your movie film ready to start
3) none window manager
Maybe you can look at LIMP distribution, to know how they have used "ram
disk" and starting X, and then, use autoplayiso software (source code) to
know how to start X with some applications (in this particulary case,
mplayer).

wanted to with out any sign of stress.

Apparently the 55-ohm "Studio" model is a lot louder than
the old 600-ohm model. I have the latter.

Yes, it's like looking at Jessica Alba's skin with a microscope - all of
a sudden, you start seeing all sorts of ugly things.

I'm experiancing the same thing with my new speakers. A week ago i picked up
a set of Anthony Gallo Reference 3.1s and i am in love with my collection all
over again. I too have noticed all sorts of things that the engineers didn't
manage to fix, level changes etc. It's really exciting.
I love this hobby and all the folks that bring us music.

When I got my alesis monitor speakers I realised that the church organs in
bach's complete works actually also had the hiss from the pipes recorded. :-)
But the sennheisers I got as a gift aren't that bad either. Its just bad for
listening to compressed audio/video. You hear a lot more of the artefacts...

speakers. A week ago i picked up
a set of Anthony Gallo Reference 3.1s and i am in love with my collection all
over again. I too have noticed all sorts of things that the engineers didn't
manage to fix, level changes etc. It's really exciting.
i bought a pair of studio monitors but went back to shit consumer KLHs since they actually
have bass - the way monitors roll off below 60 or 70 hz pretty much necessitates a
subwoofer if you work with the kind of music i do..
as for headphones, bought a pair of SONY MDR-V6 almost 10 years ago at J&R Music World
in manhattan - theyve been crushed inside a backpack and dropped more times than i can
count and the ear pads havent even fallen off, theyre comfortable, and - they sound great
when paired w/ an Echo Indigo.. they're looking to last aobut as long as me..
I love this hobby and all the folks that bring us music.

It depends on what's the cost of an arm and a leg. ;-)
You can get somewhat close to the quality of the highest-end phones
available today for like $200 with Sennheiser HD580:

The real high end would be something like Sennheiser HD650 (about $400),
Beyerdynamic DT 880 ($300), AKG K 701 ($400), Grado GS-1000 ($900), etc.
As a rule of thumb:
Sennheiser sounds really laid-back, very transparent, extremely "airy".
The emphasis is on transparency above all, the phone is just a conduit
for the sound that makes as little change as possible. Some people find
them too laid back. They are extremely comfortable, you can wear them
for hours on end and you won't feel them. I fell asleep several times
and just didn't notice them.
Grado is sort of the opposite, the emphasis is on details. Think of them
as the electronic microscopes of headphones. They shove the details in
your face, it's impossible to miss anything. Some people find them too
bright and abrasive, but they're awesome for detail work when editing,
mixing, etc. Some models (like the SR125 that I own) are not too
comfortable if you wear them more than an hour or so.
Beyerdynamic and AKG are somewhere in between those extremes in terms of
sound "personality". They're pretty comfortable.
I own a pair of Sennheiser HD600 (the HD580 are the same, just made with
cheaper materials). They're actually somewhat distracting if I use them
for casual listening (e.g. if I watch a DVD and listen through the
phones) as they reveal all sorts of sound editing artifacts, or
particular details of the sound stage that are impossible to hear
otherwise, etc. It is quite an experience, very impressive.
They've been superseded by the HD650, but I haven't tried those yet.

I love the way my Grado SR60s sound ($60US), but I don't think they're
the most comfortable headphones in the world. Open back, too, so they
may not be appropriate if , e.g. you have mics nearby and use the
headphones for monitoring.
As for lightweight earplugs, do you mean actual earplugs or in-ear
monitors? I bought a pair of Etymotic Research ER-6 earphones for
something like $80. I wear them at work to drown out all the
background noise. Unfortunately, they're not that comfortable either,
since you have to jam them in your ear hole. The silicone 2-flange
eartips seem a little too big, so I use the foam one instead. Great
noise reduction, and decent sound too. No problems keeping them in
place, but vibrations from the wire (like if it hits your desk when
you lean forward) get transmitted into your ear so you have to secure
it.

I like my Sony MDR-7506, some say they are a bit bass heavy though.

Headphones are an extremely personal item so it is hard to give and take
recommendations. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs are designed for studio
monitoring with a very flat response and have been compared favorably
against the Sennheisers HD280Pro. The DV247 site lists them for £48.99
I use the Etymotic Research ER-20 ear plugs when I go to the clubs. These
musicians ear plugs are great if you want to attinuate the sound (about
20db) but still get good tonal qualities. My wife used these when as a
second violin she was backed up against the trumpets. These will stay in
place.
