Hi,
I'm thinking about switching to CentOS (from Ubuntu) at home,
because of several reasons, but wonder: is it good for running Ardour,
Jack and related stuff? I don't mind using Ardour 2, as I don't need
anything very sophisticated, and would only want something that I can
configure once and stop worrying about. I do sysadmin work for a living,
and would rather not do it when I get home :-)

I know CentOS has been used with the Fedora based PlanetCCRMA in the
past so might be worth asking on their list as to the current status of
it. I also know there is a more general audio spin for Fedora now
(Fedora Jam??) so not sure how active PlanetCCRMA still is...

That's the problem: it seems PlanetCCRMA is still "on the works"
for Fedora 20, and Fedora 21 has been out there already for a while.
Besides, I'd like to use more-or-less standard repositories as much as
possible.
Anyway, from what I've gathered from my "investigations" these last
few days, I'm starting to realize that it's going to be easier to simply
install a LTS version of Ubuntu and stick to it: things like low latency
kernels and dkms are in the default repositories, while you have to
"cook" your own in CentOS. I could do it, but it'd be a maintenance
nightmare. And that's precisely what I'd like to avoid.
A pity, because each time I upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu and
something breaks (usually the sound stuff; in particular, usually
pulseaudio), I angrily vow to switch to something else (fists raised to
the sky and all that). Guess it's time to ditch pulseaudio for good and
use only jack, and see if that makes everything easier.

Hi Roberto,
if you want to keep stable Linux audio userspace with less maintenance,
then the easiest way is to use a distro that follows upstream and that
provides an audio repository.
Some from this mailing list are using Arch Linux. For Arch there is the
Arch audio repository and the Arch user repository in addition to the
official repositories. They provide audio software and Linux RT.
For Ubuntu LTS you need to install a PPA in addition to the official
repositories, since Ubuntu follows Debian and Debian's policy is a PITA
for audio users. Or is e.g. linuxsampler now available by the official
repositories? However, the biggest issue for audio users on release
model distros is making audio userspace maintenance much harder than
for a distro that follows stable releases from upstream.
By your point of view likely two things are not that nice with Arch
Linux.
1. One time you need to set up everything yourself, but Arch provides
good howtos.
2. You regularly need to upgrade and before upgrading you should read
the news on the Arch homepage, to avoid trouble.

My needs are very humble: I only use qjackctl, Ardour, Hydrogen and
some LADSPA plugins. I've seen that many people use a plethora of audio
software (which use goes way over my head), but I really need only
something to record guitar and bass, generate some drum tracks and
process it a bit so it hides my awful playing. I hoped I could do it
using standard repos in CentOS, but from the feedback in this list and
some googling, it seems that's not the case.

closer to stable upstream releases
of audio tools. Beside that it comes with all development tools and
headers, so if it get you, you can build your own stuff without any hazel.
And still it is debian based without follow the "strict" debian rules.

FWIW some distros, e.g. Arch don't split packages, IOW headers are

experiences AV Linux makes Debian repository usage tricky. Likely an

In fact, I'm currently using a low latency kernel, but only because
some time ago I was testing a Behringer UCG102, and I felt (very
subjective measuring) that it behaved better. I had never heard about
that "threadirqs" option. What's it for? I could only find the commit
description for it [1], and it seems it's mostly a debug option.

PS: Since the OP experienced issues with pulseaudio, an easy way to get
rid of it, without the need to stop it or to care about hard
dependencies, is to build an empty dummy package. Doing this for Ubuntu
and Debian takes a few seconds, using

But AV-Linux is 32-bit, and uses GTK2, and ... well ... Did you see
the first episode of "IT Crowd"? "Are you from the past?" :-)
Looks like a good distro to install in an old computer that you're
only and exclusively going to use for audio stuff, and never upgrading
again. But it's not really the best fit if you want to use your computer
as a regular desktop too.

Fedora 21 support is almost there (I posted an announcement in the
Planet CCRMA list), only some packages left to redo (probably the most
important of those is pd-extended). For every release there is something
that stops compiling and needs to be updated or patched...
Something to remember is that most of what Planet CCRMA used to package
is now part of Fedora proper. Qjackctl, Ardour, rtirq and all usual
suspects are in Fedora, so you do not need additional repositories for
those. As other poster points out there is even a "spin" for audio
called Fedora Jam. Planet CCRMA still maintains the rt patched kernel
and "exotic" software like supercollider, pd-extended, chuck and others.
I hope those will migrate to Fedora in due time.

If you do not need an rt patched kernel Fedora is enough...

That's good news. My only qualm about Fedora is that, like Ubuntu,
it has a short life cycle. If I'm not mistaken, there's a new release
each 6 months, and I don't know how feasible would be to upgrade once in
a while, or to keep using an "old" release once two or three newer ones
have appeared.
On the other hand, if all "standard" audio software is in Fedora,
it shouldn't be that hard to repackage it for CentOS 7. I don't like
recompiling, but repackaging is different. I should be able to do it
just by downloading the src.rpms and rpmbuilding once. Are you aware of
any hard dependency in "the usual suspects" that could keep me from
doing so?

My opinion is that almost any distro will do but some take more time to
set up than others. CentOS might be a bit behind with the current
versions of some applications but maybe it works with the

I'm currently running Fedora 19 x86_64 with the Planet CCRMA extensions.
Performance is excellent on desktop and laptop machines here.
According to the Planet C site CentOS 5 is supported.

Assumed Robert should decide to use CentOS, while he likely is
accustomed to build DEB packages, if needed, then 'checkinstall' often
can be used to build a DEP or RPM package. Usage of checkinstall is as
easy as editing a PKGBUILD for Arch. IOW, assumed you want to switch
from your DEB based to a RPM based distro very easy, if needed, try
using checkinstall (as replacement for 'make install'), when there is
the need to build a package.

I'm replying myself to give some closure to this thread, so it
doesn't stay forever in the limbo of unfinished threads :-)
After serious consideration and the great input from this list,
I'll stick to Ubuntu LTS. What drove me to this decision:
- Having all the software I need (and lots more) in the standard
repos: this made Ubuntu win over CentOS, where I'd need to use
non-standard repos and maybe compile some stuff myself. Not speaking
only about audio software, but also desktop stuff like the Nvidia
proprietary driver, which is handled nicely by Debian/Ubuntu.
- Having a long support cycle: this made Ubuntu LTS win over
Fedora, which could be a great choice if not for its 13-month support
period.
- Being a good distro for everyday needs: this discarded AV-Linux
and other specialized distros.
