how would I route audio in Ubuntu 9.04/Gnome to the HDMI output/connector?
and subsequently has anyone used this (or a similar) interface:

Give us the output of `aplay -l`
It should show an hdmi pcm output.
I use qjackctl to swicth between pcm outputs, then you must tell your
app (eg. xine) to use jack as audio engine.
