Hi all,
I recently bought a double bass and am loving it. Fun to play and
amazing sound with fingers and bow. I will be looking for a teacher
soon but first and foremost i'm looking for some good stuff to listen
too! I'm really enjoying Willie Dixons stuff and a few tracks by
Freundeskries (german hiphop) and Donovan. What else is good? I'd love
to here tracks in a range of style both bow and fingers.

he actually plays a modified electric (but upright) bass, but still
worth listening to. for an introduction to the possibilities, check out
"Pendulum" or "The Colors of Morning". Pendulum is all solo, but
multi-tracked.
also Miroslav Vitous on ECM. on other labels he often played electric
bass guitar, but on ECM there's some gorgeous work on acoustic.
the bass player from Oregon can also be pretty inspirational, though he
sometimes fades away into the background.
and of course Ron Carter, who despite his ability to play electric bass
guitar with the best of the (well, almost), always insisted that
acoustic double bass had a quality that could never be replicated.
for something entirely different, check out "Ruby Vroom" by Soul
Coughing. an amazing sound (partly thanks to tom waits' producer tchad
blake) with the upright bass front and center in a
groovy/funky/psycho/rock/godKnowsWhat kind of setting. years ahead of
their time, and never really replicated.

In a very other way, Trevor Dunn (my teacher)'s Trio Convulsant, which
lies somewhere between bop and punk (not in the way of punk jazz,
though!) is seomthing I like very much!

Sure, Ron Carter is great. Seems to be a bit worse than he was, though.

Seconded -- he's very impressive. One of my major influences as a
bassist was Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen's work, particularly when
he's accompanying a vocalist; "Those Who Were" is great. There are
some fun double-bass parts on some of Roni Size's albums too.
For the philosophy of playing the instrument, I would recommend
reading Patrick Süsskind's "The Double Bass"... ;)

Oh yeh, sorry I forgot to mention him. I recently watched a YouTube
video of a very young NHOP accompanying a much older (but still
brilliant) Bud Powell. Nils was really impressive even then. Truly one
of the giants.

I saw him with Jack Dejohnette many
years ago, in a group that included
Lester Bowie on trumpet and John Abercrombie on guitar. Bowie and
Dejohnette surprised everyone with a duet on those little end-blown
Hohner keyboards (I called them keyharps). Not quite as weird as seeing
Ed Blackwell play a saw solo with Mingus, but still pretty strange stuff.
Gomez, another titan. Man, he was so smooth.

It depends on what you would like to pursue first. Is it jazz, for instance?
Unforutnately, there are a small number of classical pieces written
for the bass and even less recorded. You find a lot of information
about jazz bass players. For instance, Scott LaFaro (who died young,
but can be found on recordings before his death in '61.) Get the Bill
Evans Village Vanguard sessions. Heck, you can also hear him on
youtube, but the recordings aren't so good. I could give you a list of
jazz players to pursue, but first what is your focus?

If you like Willie Dixon's work you should check out the Muddy Waters
recordings with Big Crawford.

If you're gonna go that far then definitely check out Jimmy Blanton.
He basically invented walking bass. For swing, I think his feel
absolutely can't be topped. Seriously, over PC Ray Brown, Oscar
Petiford. If you are interested in the role of bass as a rhythm
section instrument (as opposed to a super-chops/soloist) then it's
good idea to check out some drummers/great-rhythm-sections.
