Hi. Has anyone got sineshaper installed on FC3? I'm having the most terrible
dependency problems. gtkmm, then glibmm, and the list of deps goes on and on.
I thought that Fedora extras handled thes deps, but adding the urls to yum
for the fedora extras hasn't solved it. Yum says gtkmm doesn't exist. I'm not
knocking anything. I'd just like to get sineshaper working, as it sounds like
a good synth. Any tips, hints. Nigel.

I tried on debian testing. All I had to do was install libglademm-2.4-dev
whcih pulld in some dependancies. Unfortunately debian doesn't have a
package for DSSI so I stopped there.

Whats stopping it from being autotoolized? Anything in particular?
Or are you saying it was a nightmare to package *because* of autotools?

I'm not a debian dev but I know people who are. I am however pretty
fluent in the autotools foo.

I just upgraded libgtkmm to the current version on Gentoo and I was
done.

Fedora is the thing that's terrible, not Sineshaper.
I've had people with these problems numerous times with Om as well
(which also depends on Gtkmm), exclusively with Fedora. I can't
possibly understand how Fedora doesn't have the very widely used
official C++ bindings to GTK. How many packages do they have? 12?
Try switching to a distribution that actually ..distributes..
things people need.

Fedora Core + Extras has the required software, but the versions
available on fc3 are not new enough for sineshaper (2.4.x vs. 2.6.x).
Fc4 has newer versions, but I have not yet tried to build sineshaper or
om on it. I presume they will build if the right packages are

I've had this problem many times over the years while building packages
for Planet CCRMA. Some programs require the latest version of core
libraries, and those requirements are sometimes not fullfilled on old
versions of distributions (my experience is with Redhat/Fedora Core).
Some programs don't use the latest APIs and build everywhere. It is up
to the developer to choose, some prefer the latest and greatest (and
their packages will not build on older distros), some are more
conservative in their choices and their packages build on older versions
of a given distro.

is it some kind of issue for Fedora to have multiple versions installed? gtkmm-2.2.12
(and 2.8.1) are installed here, but it seems the only one that needs 2.2.12 is
media-sound/seq24-0.7.0, tisk-tisk...

gtkmm-2.2.12 (and 2.8.1) are installed here, but it seems the only one
that needs 2.2.12 is media-sound/seq24-0.7.0, tisk-tisk...

I've been down this path myself trying to get this to work, and realized that maybe
it's just best for me to pass on trying out these couple of new audio apps. Like most
things I feel that this will be worked out somewhere down the road.

I have had this problem with qt before (ie: developers wanting the
latest version for the app to build - I had to build newer versions of
qt to support newer apps) but I don't think I had hit it with gtk2.
I'm pretty sure there must be some very convenient api feature in the
new version of gtk2, but I still would urge developers to stay one or
two major versions back in their requirements, so that their software is
easier to build on older versions of distros.

The proper package to install from Fedora Extras would be:
yum install libglademm24-devel
That will pull in all the proper dependencies...
But that will not be enough, see below.

In FC3 the gtk2 packages in the core distribution are not new enough to
support the required version of libglademm and friends (2.4.x vs.
2.6.x). So, there are packages for all the required stuff in Fedora
Extras but the versions are not new enough[*] for fc3. It looks like fc4
has newer stuff that would work (I have not tried)...
Upgrading gtk2 in fc3 would not be impossible (so that all other
packages can go up in version), but such a central package usually has a
lot of dependencies (ie: other packages that depend on it) that are
sometimes broken by new versions - so then you need to upgrade the
dependencies and so on and so forth. When I have tried to do this in the
past it has not been worth the effort.

Sineshaper is a really nice synth, but it's not worth pushing yourself into
mental overload to get it to work on Fedora. Thanks for all your work on the
