Hi,
I am going to buy a master keyboardand I am wondering what's the best choice
to avoid compatibility issues (if any...) according to experienced midi
users/musicians on this list.

Hello!
I use M-Audio Oxygen series, Oxygen 8 and 65. Works really great, no
compatibility problems. M-Audio is known to usually comply with standard
MIDI and standard USB.

I have a Midisport 1x1 and an Oxygen 49 and they rock.
Meanwhile, all the AKAI stuff is class-compliant USB MIDI...
so it works fine in Linux without doing anything special.

However, I just got an Oxygen 49 in December, and it didn't
work until I installed the firmware loader. I even had to
compile it by hand on a different distro.

Thanks for your suggestions. *M-AUDIO Oxygen 61 (3rd Generation*) seems the
right choice for me.
Happy to see I was worried about compliance with no reason at all :-)
With regard to midisport, there's a "midisport-firmware" package/loader in
debian repos so there's no need to install it by hand anymore.

I'm also an M-Audio Axiom user -- I use the 61-key model (a generation
behind the current version), which is perfectly sufficient for my needs.
It's light-weight but sturdy, terrific for gigging or for playing in one's
lap. The key/control assignments are simple, straightforward, and
limitlessly customizable. I don't think I had to do anything special to make
it work under ubuntu. It does not have active sensing.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it has no battery bay, which
means I am dangerously tethered to my laptop via usb when I run around on
stage playing the thing like a keytar (or in practice, I'm confined to a
small space when I would greatly prefer to run around and play the thing
like a keytar -- behind-the-head is still usually possible).

Second that. I have an Oxygen8 that broke down recently. And my
Keystation 61es isn't high quality either. So I'd also consider looking
at other brands. As long as the keyboard is a USB1.1 class compliant
device you should be good to go.

Sorry for writing here when you're already made up your mind, but I want to
say a few words about Edirol PCR-800. I'm quite happy with it. It's connected
via USB and do also have MIDI in/out. When using the USB interface, the PCR's
MIDI in/out functions as a MIDI interface. It works sell with Linux.

BTW, I recently managed to make my Cakewalk A-800PRO work with Linux in
"advanced mode" USB, by modifying sound/usb/usbquirks.h. Not needed if

just pretend they can't remember their name). I think it's much better,
unless one needs a DJ-style crossfader on a keyboard.

The PC editor for the PCRs works well under Wine; I believe that every aspect
of the PCR can be programmed manually too, but I might be wrong.

I use an M-Audio Axiom 25, and it works perfect with USB or directly with MIDI plug. Note
that not all keyboards are semi-weighted, may be this is important for you.
Another nice thing is that Enigma software works fine with wine (this is the software you
can use to save the presets to a file, if you are interested in using the keyboard like a
midi controller: slides, knobs,...)

velocity sensitive, and has a nice arpeggiator. Its configuration
software works perfectly with wine on Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit).

I have some kids with autism who would really dig playing a controller
though yoshimi. But they are really tough on gear. If it was just me using
it I'd probably hunting for a nice deal on an oxygen 49 or 61. But my
suspicion is those shiny little mappable controllers would be the first to
go. Possibly followed by the functioning of the keys. Although, hey, what if
I mapped a bunch of the sliders to a subtractive synth and cut them loose?
I'm torn.
Of the models that work with linux, which would be tough and survive abuse?
And how tough can those little controller knobs really be?

I had a Behringer (sold it recently) and it worked out of the box. Only
tried it via USB. I think they're about the cheapest you can find and
they work ok - can't tell about the quality though as I'm no
keyboardist.
