Greetings,
If any of you have experience in this direction, perhaps you could
suggest what I should recommend to my better half (Ivy). Her Inspiron is
showing the all-too-familiar signs of infestation, slowing down to a
crawl and sometimes even stopping completely. She's not ready for Linux
yet, so she has to resolve this problem with XP. She's looking at some
free and some commercial programs that claim to clean and repair the
registry, but neither of us know if there are any especially recommended
programs or utilities for such a job.
Any advice from the dual-booters out there in LAU land ?

I've had good experience with Toniarts Easicleaner
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm . It's free, and
it also does a number of other useful things like finding duplicate
files, letting you control all those startup programs that accumulate
and slow down bootup, etc.

I recommend just reformatting and reinstalling Windows. Could save a lot of
headache, and make it cleaner than a regcleaner could do.
Of course, I really recommend that you use Ubuntu instead.. :-)

As long as Ivy continues to work at her present job she's bound to
Windows. Happily, she has resigned from that job recently, and she has
also met a few colleagues who are using Ubuntu. She's interested, it's
just a matter of time. Meanwhile, for the next month she still needs XP.
Perhaps I'll convince her to start checking out the live Heron disc, I
thought it was a pretty good system for a normal user.

Windows. Happily, she has resigned from that job recently, and she has
also met a few colleagues who are using Ubuntu. She's interested, it's

Only to be VERY careful about any choice you make. It's easy to get
anxious wanting the machine to work. It's easier for one of these
tools to mess things up and make things worse than they already were.
I've not had very good luck with any of them myself. I've tried a few
downloadable demos from CNet's download.com site. They all find things
but none of them ever made my PC seem fast when they were done. This
sort of tool has a way of preying on you when you are vulnerable and
if it doesn't work they just say it's M$'s fault and things were too
messed up. Sad that there is an aftermarket of people cleaning up the
gorilla's mess.
While I write this I'm baby sitting my 9 month old laptop. It came
with Vista which I was never very happy with. Typical of the M$ Update
service it got slower and slower over time until finally yesterday it
started to outright crash. Even Alt-Ctrl-Del wouldn't do anything.
Turn it on for 3 minutes, run some software, the graphics driver goes
haywire and the screen dies. Seemed like it might be either a driver
problem or an over heating problem...
Gentoo to the rescue. I booted from a Gentoo install disk which
happens to read NTFS file systems. No problem copying off the few
things I didn't have backups for. (Thankfully that wasn't very much.)
I ran memtest86 overnight. 9 hours - no problem. I have always been
unhappy with the hard drive performance under Vista. I run hdparm -tT
under Linux and get 40MB/S from the drive. That's OK I'm thinking.
You might want to consider doing really good backups of your wife's
data and then just reinstalling Windows. It's simple, allows you to
get the machine up to date as per M$'s vision, and in my experience
nothing works as well. With that path I personally have more
confidence about the next 6 months until I get to do it again. Like
the bottle say "Rinse & repeat..."

know, reinstalling seems to be the way to go, and is generally accepted as routine system
maintenance :o
++backup, after installing all the apps and updates.
My XP install has ZoneAlarm, AdAware and Avira Antivir, and Firefox of course. This seems
to have been enough to prevent any issues for at least a couple of years.

Wow, another flood of helpful information. You guys truly rock, and I
thank you all sincerely for your input.
I think Ivy's resigned herself to re-installing the system (XP). We'll
do a backup of her files this evening, then I want to try the Hijacker
(sp?) stuff to see just what's crawling around in the registry. After
that I plan to re-install. What a solution... :-/
I love my Linux systems. :)

Hi Dave. Even though I've still got XP on a drive, I don't use it any longer,
but when I did, I installed a program named Process Guard, which prevents
things being installed unless you specifically allow it. See the link below
for where you get it from.

I had no problems with updating 3rd party security apps while it was up and
protecting the system, except for Zone Alarm updates, where I had to
temporarily disable it, so that the firewall updated properly. As XP is soon
to come lose it's security support from MS, I expect that Zone Alarm too will
cease providing updates, as I found out on my ME install, when MS dropped it.

btw: I've now got Qtractor built on Archlinux, thanks to a patch that Rui sent
to me, that allows using gcc 4.3, which was the problem causing make to fail.
I'm currently playing around with it.
