Hi list,
I'm researching a project that requires a light-weight computer and I'm
considering using something like an Intel NUC NUC5i7RYH with a low cost
stereo audio interface such as a Behringer UCA222.
Will there be any issues running linux audio on NUCs such as this one?

with 2 NUCs they are fully comparable with a laptop (they're built with
laptop technology) as a computer. I'm running openSUSE Tumbleweed/Leap
now days on them and there is no issues. However. I would do a little

Here's my two NUCs. Both have been tested with kxstudio just for the fun
of it. I used a cheap USB-card for the sound at that point. It worked
but I wouldn't do any serious audio with that one.
NUC5i5RYB (Media player for my TV running openSUSE Tumbleweed)
D54250WYK (small home server running openSUSE Leap 4.2)
Another thing I would check is if you gonna use a USB sound card, is the
interrupts. I recently purchased a Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK. It's my
first "real" USB sound device. It was definitely not just to put it in
and run it. I had to switch USB input so that It could be used with a
low latency kernel and to get rid of all the XRUNs. Now I run it with
23ms. Not as fine and dandy as my old trusty ice1712 but it's ok.

Hi,
As a sysadmin of several headless audio/video recording and streaming NUC
servers working 24/7, I can say those machines are very stable.
I use them with a custom RT kernel and jackd as a sound server daemon driving
some various external USB pro sound cards (M-Audio, Focusrite, Lexicon, etc..)
and USB webcams.
The only pb I have is when micro power losses appear sometimes, but this is out
of topic.

My understanding is that they run on 12V, (maybe 16V laptop PS). Power out
issues should be easier to deal with on these than with a desktop. I
understand that in your case the trouble may not be great enough to make
adding battery BU worth while. But for others concidering them it is worth
the note.

I don't have the references ATM, but they are Intel NUCs from 1st to 3rd generation.

Only against the kernel version needed, latest models requiring revent kernels...
What latency do you use? (jack terms are fine 128/2 for example)
I use high latency for many box but I've been able to work at 10ms over a USB
card and a reasonable audio process.
I note the use of webcams, does that mean you are also streaming video?
yes
I think the problem comes from electromagnetic interferences in my environment.
I've been able to not have the looses in other spaces..

even that. The NUC6PGYH may be the better box for low latency audio
depending on the software being used (sw that can use all 4 cores may do
better... sw that does everything on one core not so much)
As with Intel laptops these are the downsides in my opinion:
- nothing better than an i3 (laptop i5/7 are just faster i3)
- USB ports are less than optimal and you can't add another
- no CPU swapping (replacing a dual core i7 with a quad i5 if an upgrade)
- two or three boxes for audio instead of one (external PS, external
audio, plus box) may a slim server box with everything inside
would be smaller.

There are also 4 core atom boards (from intel yet) that seem better.
Anyway, I think there are better solutions out there. I have looked at the
NUC a few times and been dissapointed every time by the price for value...

Thanks Len, I'll look into these - apparently a friend of mine already
has a Bela board, so I'll see how he got on with it. Seems the Bela can
run SuperCollider, which is what I need, although it may not have the
processing power that's necessary.
