Hey guys!
Every once in a while this question is asked on the list. This time it is
me. I want to buy a netbook, for it to be easy to carry around and have
long battery life.
My wife has a Samsung X120, which is great. She runs Photoshop on it quite
fine. But it is out of stock almost everywhere.
I was wondering if anyone of you can advice a netbook that will work well
with Linux (I use Ubuntu) and yet have enough performance to work with
Linux Audio.

I believe Ken Restivo gigged for 2 years using an Asus EEEPC netbook
that had great reliability and more than adequate performance.

I gigged with an eee 701 (running pure:dyne) for a while, now i use a
901 running Arch Linux. They're not the most solidly built machines
(especially the 701), but the soundcard is excellent and they're cheap
enough on ebay that I really ought to carry a spare.

Got an EEE from the 1000x line
here and it's a very good little netbook
and probably the linux friendliest computer I've ever owned. I've never
done audio work on mine, reserving my Mac Mini for fhat, but I don't
doubt it could handle light work painlessly enough.

One vote for EEE. My 701 has survived tens and tens of shows with no
problem. Audio out is good enough for live sound, but on input
channels there is something weird going on. So if you need those, then
would think twice or maybe I have bad one. Have mostly used some LXDE
Ubuntu although now I have a command line only install on it as I can
hear sound without seeing what is going on.

Hello Louigi,
I think anything will do as long as it runs Linux. I have a cheap
Packard Bell (part of Acer) and it works fine for me besides some
quirks. I basically chose it because it had a 11,6" screen and a
full-size keyboard. If I'd to buy a new one I would pick one out that
fits my needs, check if the hardware is supported and then I'd buy it
online.

My main computer at this point is a netbook, an ASUS EEEPC, 1000HE. It does
pretty well, although I think the IRQ setup is less than optimal, since the
onboard soundcard shares IRQ with the video board....speaking of which, are
such things now configurable in a modern kernel, or are we stuck with
hardware arrangements, however unfortunate, on such machines?
For more mission-critical RT work, etc., I use an outboard sound interface,
a Lexicon Lambda, which works well, and the USB port performance and IRQ,
etc. are solid, and conflict-free....

System76 also does only Linux computers, but I believe they've
discontinued their Linux netbook. My wife has one (the Starling), it
shipped with Ubuntu 11.04 and upgraded smoothly to 11.10 (LTS).

Thanks for this resource, seems like a nice one to bookmark. Unfortunately,
they do not ship notebooks worldwide,
obviously a problem for me here in Russia: "We ship all products
world-wide, except for laptops which we can only supply within the U.K
because of keyboard layout, warranty coverage and worldwide differences in
power supply standards."
Still, the site looks interesting, maybe someone else will take a note of
