I'm running debian sid.
Anyone know of a good filter I can use to remove voice? I've got some flac
files that I'd like to filter to remove voice and burn for my kids to
sing with.
I tried using xmms, which has a few voice removal plugins that work
fine, but if I use the Disk Writer plugin for output then the effects
are not in the output wav files.
I tried using sox:
sox in.wav out.wav band <center>
But I can't find a good setting for <center> that works anywhere as
well as xmms's Voice Removal or DeFX plugins.
I'm looking for something like sox -- trying to avoid snd or audacity
just to make converting a lot of files easier. Plus, I tried Steve
Harris' LADSPA Karaoke plugin and it doesn't seem to work quite as
well as the ones in xmms. Subjective, of course.
Any suggestions?

that probably does the same thing, you can apply it to WAV files with
ecasound or applyplugin.

I'm no expert at this, but few tips:
sh> ecasound -i foo.wav -o alsa -el:karaoke,-3
ecasound> start
ecasound> cop-set 1,1,XXX
... replace XXX with parameters to karaoke plugin. You can hear the result
in real-time (replace 'alsa' with 'jack_alsa' or '/dev/dsp' if
needed).
You can also add multiple effects. For example to add a separate bass
chain (not processed with karaoke plugin):
sh> ecasound -a:1,2 -i foo.wav -o alsa -a:1 -el:karaoke,-40 -ea:200 -a:2 -efl:400 -c
ecasound> start
That mixes together karaoke-processed signal (with -40dB reduction to
vocals), with a separate chain for bass (<400Hz). You should play with the
parameters to get best results. You can of course use other LADSPA plugins
instead -efl (ecasound's internal lowpass filter), and also add more
effects. To control karaoke parameters with the above setup:
ecasound> c-select 1
ecasound> co-set 1,1,XXX
Another useful command is "c-bypass" which turns of all the effects. Issue
"c-bypass" again to reactive the plugins. You need to use "c-select"
for
selecting which processing chain to bypass.
Once you've found good set of parameters, omit the "-c" option (for
interactive mode) and replace "alsa" with a filename, and you are ready to
batch-process files.
More info about the available interactive commands can be found from "man
ecasound-iam" and "man ecasound".
PS If someone can come up with good sets of parameters, let me know
and I'll add them as default presets to ecasound for everyone
to use. You can make a preset out of the above by simply adding the
following to your ~/ecasound/effect_presets:
--cut--
voiceremove = -el:karaoke,-40 -ea:150 | -efl:400
--cut--
The '|' separates parallel processing chains. You can then use the preset
by issuing:
sh> ecasound -i foo.mp3 -o alsa -pn:voiceremove -c
... you can also parametrize it:
--cut--
voiceremove_varcutoff = -el:karaoke,-40 -ea:150 | -efl:%1
--cut--
sh> ecasound -i foo.mp3 -o alsa -pn:voiceremove_varcutoff,500 -c
ecasound> start
ecasound> cop-set 1,1,600
... and so on. :)

very specific ecasound questions, I recommend continuing the discussion on
ecasound-list mailing list (see eca.cx website for info).
1. I have an input file that is MONO, but the output
defaults to STEREO. Why?
As there can be multiple input and output files (and devices), there is
no direct relation between the input and output file formats in the
special case that there happens to be exactly one input and output. Unless
you specify the format with "-f" option, ecasound will use default params
(-f:16,2,44100 ... can be redefined in ~/ecasound/.ecasoundrc - see man
ecasoundrc(5)) when creating new files.
Special-purpose frontends such as ecaplay usually behave differently
(i.e. similar to aplay, sox, etc) - the output is opened with audio format
taken from the input file.
2. See below warnings I receive when running ecasound.

jackeq - routes and manipulates audio from/to multiple sources
jamin - Audio mastering from a mixed down multitrack source with JACK
I guess I'll need to do some reading to know what is what.

These voice-removal-plugins are afaik all the same algorithm. and this works
on some songs but not on all. And from my experience most times it works it
also removes the bass. Only exception is the Voice-Removal for aRts shipped
in kdemultimedia where the normal algorithm is combined with a Xover filter
so the bass isn't affected by the removal. Which work better but again not on
all songs...
So it might be that you got songs where this doesn't work...
