I guess the subject says it all. I haven't been able to find an rt
version of the current (2.6.26.5-45.fc9.i686 SMP) Fedora 9 kernel, and I
was kinda hoping someone out there might have already compiled one.

Based upon Fernando's recent answer to a different thread on this issue
that I somehow overlooked, I'm going to guess that the answer to my
question is a big fat no.
In fact, I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about the new kernels
being unpatchable for rt use. Hopefully, things will straighten
themselves out soon.

Try patch 2.6.26-8 with rt11

Realtime patched kernels for Fedora 9 are available from the Planet
CCRMA repositories. The newest ones come from the "testing" repository
and that includes 2.6.24.7-rt21 and 2.6.26.7-rt11 kernels, the former
seems to work fine (so far). I received an answer off the list about
midi & 2.6.26.x and that user had it working. I'm looking at config file
differences now, but his system is 64 bits and mine is 32...

Hi Fernando,
I confirm midi is working with 2.6.26-8 on debian lenny but jackd freezes
trying to stop when with snd_seq. (DLs state in the output of `ps -ax`).
I didn't test the other alternatives (not a midi fan... simple user) but I
am going to and feedback to this thread.

midi is seriously broken on 2.6.26-rt, specially when driven outboard;
events delivered out of time if at all, outrageous jitter and
unpredictable drop outs; internally sequenced material (eg. queueing
events to a softsynth) might work barely but that is just little comfort.
note that this badness applies to PREEMPT_RT kernels >= 2.6.26, vanilla
is fine afaict.
all that trouble seems to be related to a regression in 2.6.26-rc2 that
just made the bkl non preemptible anymore, leaving the -rt people with a
herculean task to comply--look after Ingo Molnar's "Kill the BKL" tree
for news...

I have the same problem on debian sid .... in kernels greater than 2.6.26.3-rt3 .... jack
freezes and I can't kill any rt app launched ... :-(

I keep hearing rumors that the kernel devs are basically trying to make
the vanilla kernel "rt-capable", meaning I think that they want to make
special patching unnecessary for the task. What we're seeing now are
side-effects of this effort, which will hopefully right itself soon.
Only rumors, I'm afraid. If someone out there has some real knowledge on
this issue, feel free to speak up. :-)

you use the former then ALSA can use CONFIG_SND_RTCTIMER... But this is
just a guess on my part.
