Many headphone amps are bad. The sound quality even of my elCheapo
Behringer mixer was ok, when it was new, excepted of the sound quality
of it's headphone amp. In my experiences headphone amps of Pioneer and
Sony consumer equipment are ok, at least those of my 80s and 90s hifi
amp, cd player and DAT recorder.
If Bob just wants to listen, while playing, the sound quality isn't
important, less good sound quality just isn't fun and might make you
quicker wearied. If headphones should be used for mixing, sound quality
is very important. Even if gear provides a good headphone amp, the
routing of the audio signal is still important. You really need to
listen to the real outputs, ok, might be irrelevant, if the analog
domain isn't involved, for just monitoring the digital domain.
Sure, for the home studio we usually can't spend much money, but since
Bob ogles with "some expensive Bose headphones", he might wants to
consider to look for something else.

much money, but since
Bob ogles with "some expensive Bose headphones", he might wants to
consider to look for something else.
IMHO using cheap wireless headphones for recording is a sure
recipe for shooting yourself in the foot. Even the cheap wired
ones are mostly crap today (they used to be better before
smartphones made everyone wanting to use them).
Some weeks ago at work we tested some cheap wired over-ear
headphones (prices in the 30 to 80 euro range) from the usual
suspects (AKG, JBL, Bose, ...). We wanted to find out if we
could include some standard EQ in the smartphone audio chain
in order to improve the 'listening experience'. They all
turned out to be horrible in their own specific way, each
one requiring its own quite heavy EQ to make them sound
more or less right.
Conclusion: if you want to headphones for serious audio
work then spend some money on them.

Oh, and they are far more comfortable to wear for long sessions.
Unless you're prancing about on stage and *specifically* need the mobility I
can't see any point in going wireless.

If the wire of my around 34 years old AKG K 240 DF touches the
touchscreen, it is an issue, I wouldn't experience, if I would use a
wireless headphone ;), but I never considered to get a wireless
headphone. I would recommend using the AKG K 240 DF, but unfortunately
it's discontinued.

PS.
I forgot I also experienced Aiwa consumer gear headphone amps as good.
So, in my experiences _for home recording_ hifi gear headphone amps
from Pioneer, Sony and Aiwa always were ok. At least of my Pioneer
amp, Sony and Aiwa DAT recorders. I'm not sure about my Pioneer CD
player and AIWA tape recorder, but IIRC they were ok, too. None of
this hifi gear was expensive, it was cheap hifi gear. The sound quality
of this hifi gear is similar good as the headphone output of my RME
HDSPe AIO.
