Hello all,
I'm about to build a machine strictly for recording audio. I've
looked around the web for suggestions on how to partition the disks,
and have found a lot of useful information. At the risk of beating a
dead horse, I would like to get some suggestions from this list as to
how you partition your disks.
A little background - recording will be simple, nothing major, and
mostly for my own enjoyment. It is doubtful that any of it will see
the light of day. Mastering will be minimal. The machine will have
two hard disks, so I will need to spread out the work between the two.
Finally, I'll be running Ubuntu. Not sure what audio interface yet,
though.
Bottom line, this is for personal use on a not-optimal machine, but I
want to make the best of it and learn in the process.
To Dana - we need to post a summary of these responses on the Ubuntu
Studio website. Might be helpful to those like me in the future.

If I may be so bold as to add a question :
what filesystem should the recording disk use ?
I hear that a journaled filesystem (ext3, xfs, reiserfs), while being
safer, would be slower than - say - ext2.
My recording hard drive (80 Go) is currently using FAT32 for
compatibility, but I wonder if this is a very good choice regarding
I/O performances ?

IMHO ext3fs is the most stable and RT-ready. I don't think Ingo
patches ReiserFS or XFS in his -rt series.
From my experience, XFS is also good (but looses latest data on
power/kernel failures).

IMHO ext3fs is the most stable and RT-ready. I don't think Ingo

Cant say for sure, but I noticed that non-cached access to reiserfs
partition (/ in my case) frequently causes xruns.

Definitely not FAT32. I'd suggest XFS.

Definitely would be the way to go - wouldn't consider using anything else. :)

I go one simpler, with just swap and / on the OS drive.
So would you make the second drive /home, or would you

Yup. That's what I do. mine is on /mnt/audio/
