I decided to learn RoR[1] and decided the world didn't need yet another
homegrown blog program, so I wrote this: http://lam.fugal.net
I populated it with my own meager offerings and imported the information
from Rad IO[2] as well. Now I offer it out as a way to listen to LAM,
and a place to post your own LAM for us all to listen to.
What is it? It's simply a site to aggregate links to music made with
linux (and open source software in general). RSS (podcast) and m3u are
provided. No bothersome user accounts - it works like a wiki in that
sense but is not a wiki, which will let it evolve into something more,
based on your feedback.
And if nobody likes it, well at least I learned Rails without writing a
blog. ;-)

Hi Hans:
Thanks for the site, I'm having great fun writing an article while
listening in on the feed. I'm running Mozilla, with alsaplayer reading
the m3u, on my laptop (PII 366) with a fast cable connection. Sweet.
Rick Boulanger and his students set up a Csound broadcast, I'll find
the URL and post it here. More great fun.
I'll link some of my stuff to your site asap. Thanks again !

i'm afraid this is slightly offtopic, but does anyone know of an ogg/
vorbis plugin for the new iTunes running on 10.4?

XMMS through darwin ports works, and that is what I currently use. I've
heard good things about VLC, too.
While we're on the subject, I've done a little bit of research on the
problem with quicktime. The qtcomponents project that worked before qt7
did things as a component, when they arguably should have made a codec
from the start. Apple hadn't (and hasn't) solidified the API, and so
things stopped working in Tiger and also with QT7 on Panther.
I'm not sure, but if it had been done as a codec to begin with it might
still be working. In any case it looks like doing it as a codec is the
way to go at this stage. I think this will require basically taking
Apple's AudioCodec example and wiring it up to libvorbisfile. I and at
least one other person intend to do this "when I get time." If anyone
out there is good with Apple codecs or good with libvorbisfile, help
would be appreciated, and speed up the process.

Greetings:
Listening to the M3U playlist has been great fun. Alas, not all the
pieces include details such as author and/or production notes.
This message is merely a plea to composers to check if Hans has
included your work already, and to add relevant details where missing. I
*think* I know who wrote Hypocrisy but I'm not sure, and there are many
others in the playlist that are very cool songs currently without
composer info.
I plan on mentioning LAM in an upcoming article. As more people log
onto the site they'll also want to know who wrote what.
And if you haven't added your music yet, please do. It's a very simple
procedure, Hans has made it easy for those of us who fear and loathe Web
submission forms. :)
I'm listening to a piece named The Difference now. But I don't know
who wrote it.... :(

Obviously I'm keen on the LAM site. Alas, there's a *lot* of
Linux-made music out there that is not linked from LAM so I'd like to go
ahead and start adding more of that material. If you've posted a link to
your music on the LA* lists I'll add a link on the LAM list as well.
I'll try to add title, author, and license info whenever it's available.
If you've posted a link to your music here and you do *not* want it
linked from LAM please let me know.
There are still many pieces on the list without author ascription or
licensing info. I'll try to add that stuff too, but it'd be helpful if
other community members also looked over the list to see what needs updated.
There are cool pieces popping up on the Ardour list, in the Hydrogen
demos, and in other Linux sound-related mail lists. It'd be great to be
able to listen to it from a single site.
And muchas gracias to everyone who has already fixed entries and added
new material !

I like the idea of LAM and all the other lists that
have appeared. It's great stuff.
I store my songs in a single directory. Some of them
are appropriate for these listings and others aren't.
Is there a convienant way for site admins and
musicians to automate what gets listed, author, song
title, notes and license?
It seems that having an account on anyone of the
available lists where I log in and tell the site to
look for my songs at location X, read file Y to get
the information for all the songs and then let RSS
propogate that information to the other lists would be
reasonable.
I guess that would enable having a network of sites
that can come and go at the admins descretion and it
would be within the musicians control and
responsibility to maintain a single file. I guess it's
to easy to figure out what other people should do.
