Hello all,
Is there any way to use logical device nammes instead of
'hw:a.b' when setting up Qjackctl ? It seems like the
easiest way to deal with hw device numbers changing on
each boot, but I haven't found a way to do it.
Editing ~/.jackdrc doesn't work, it just gets overwritten
with the (wrong) hw device names (and I wonder why this
is done).

In the setup window, Interface field, just use "hw:device_name". I use hw:DSP in
my case. No card re-indexing issue whatsoever after reboots.

you can type in the logical name by hand in qjackctl rather than
selecting one from the combo.
For example:
fedora15:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [XFi ]: SB-XFi - Creative X-Fi
Creative X-Fi 20K1 SB073x
1 [UA25EX ]: USB-Audio - UA-25EX
EDIROL UA-25EX at usb-0000:00:13.1-1, full speed
2 [U25 ]: USB-Audio - USB Axiom 25
M-Audio USB Axiom 25 at usb-0000:00:13.5-2.1,
full speed
and in .jackdrc
/usr/bin/jackd -P89 -u -dalsa -dhw:UA25EX -r48000 -p512 -n3 -M -Xseq

afaics, you can use hw:SHORTNAME instead of the usual hw:NUMBER form,
but that only helps if you can distinguish device names by their
respective short-name ie. different device brand models.
device short-names maybe read from /proc/asound/cards, being the names
found between [] brackets.
otoh, ~/.jackdrc is optionally rewritten by qjackctl, as seen convenient
to replicate its settings when auto-starting jackd later, eventually
outside qjackctl control.
nb. qjackctl never reads from ~/.jackdrc.

I heard it's also possible to reference cards by unique IDs of some
sort, but this likely only works with interfaces that have a unique
number and I don't remember the details. Florian Faber certainly knows
how to do it.
I use shortnames myself, hw:UA25 here. I remember it's possible to enter
those numbers in the qjackctl GUI.
