Hello,
When I'm running an audio app like XMMS to play music, the sound skips
somewhat frequently (maybe 5 times in the course of an album). That's with
no load on the system, and nothing using the processor heavily. However if
I do something that peaks the CPU (like dragging a window around really
fast), this also causes the sound to skip immediately.
I recently installed jack and ardour and mean to install the low-latency
kernel patches when I get around to it; they are mentioned here:

But I'm wondering, is this XMMS audio-skipping problem related to that too?
Will intalling the low-latency patches help with that?

Are you by any chance using Mandrake, or have the kdm login manager
installed? If so, the problem is likely to be X being reniced by
default, and you might like to try this fix:
Adjust the -n level from -10 to 0 in the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers so
the last line looks like this:
:0 local /bin/nice -n 0 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -deferglyphs 16

I don't think you've got the same problem that I had, so I don't think
adding the call would help. I think all the fix did was set X to the
default nice level of 0, instead of -10 that Mandrake for some
unknown reason decided to make it.

I am quite sure that xmms blocks on something in its gui, for instance,
if I click (and hold) the background it will stop playing after a little
while. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find anything better than
xmms and I tried most of the stuff prepackaged in Debian.
