I have hesitated for weeks to post here with such a basic and possibly
stupid problem, but I am at my wits end with this.
I run Ubuntu 12.04 on a desktop computer and also on a small notebook.
Sound is fine on both of them, and I can play midi files through
tiMidity with no problem.
I want to use a midi-capable electric piano as an input device, and I
reckoned the first thing to do was to get some suitable software and
make sure I could play a midi file from a midi editor.
I have QjackCtl, Qtractor (I also have Muse) and Qsynth installed. I
have spent weeks, on and off, trying to solve the basic problem of
getting some sound from Qtractor (or Muse), but although both the editor
and QjackCtl show that an imported midi file is actually being played, I
get no sound whatsoever. This is true for both computers, even though
their hardware is pretty different. As I said earlier, the sound on
both computers is fine in other contexts, so it is almost certainly some
fundamental error on my part, but I have no idea what is wrong. I have
tried all sorts of different sets of connections in QjackCtl, but never
heard a note yet!
Having read various posts in the forum archive, I tried running
jack-metro. QjackCtl shows that the metronome is running, but
connecting the metronome to the system outputs produces no sound, so the
problem seems to be at this level.
If anyone feels they have the patience to try to point me in the right
direction, I shall be very grateful indeed.

Before we try to rule out wrong MIDI connections or a missing
soundfont, we should start with a command line to start jackd.
Run
aplay -l
in a terminal and post the output.
It will show "card 0", "card 1" ... "card n".
Then in a terminal test running
card=0; killall -9 jackd && jackd -dalsa -dhw:$card -r48000 -p1024 -n2
after that start QjackCtl, Qsynth and Qtractor and at last connect the
MIDI and audio IOs.
If it shouldn't work close Qtractor, Qsynth and QjackCtl and run
card=1; killall -9 jackd && jackd -dalsa -dhw:$card -r48000 -p1024 -n2
after that start QjackCtl, Qsynth and Qtractor and at last connect the
MIDI and audio IOs.
If it shouldn't work close QjackCtl and continue ...
If it never should work and there should be failure messages, then post
those messages. If it shouldn't work, but there should be no failure
messages then report back and we'll focus on MIDI connections and
soundfonts.

1. make sure qsynth has a proper soundfont file (*.sf2) loaded in;
2. make sure qsynth midi input driver is set to "alsa_seq" and audio
output driver is set to "jack";
3. on qtractor, load the midi file from menu track/import tracks/midi...
or just drag and drop the file into the main canvas;
4. connect qtractor's midi master/out to qsynth/fluidsynth's midi in
(midi tab on qtractor/connections or alsa tab on qjackctl/connections);
5. connect qsynth/fluidsynth's audio outs to system:playback_1,2 (audio
tab on qtractor or qjackctl/connections);
(you can do the above in any order you like, finally...)
6. hit play on qtractor...
voilá!

Before you get all involved with jackd, etc. make sure you have cabling,
etc. hooked properly. I'd start with something very simple like aplaymidi
and arecordmidi. If they don't work, then you have a cabling (or dead
piano) problem.
Next, you can figure out jack (and give me a tutorial!).

No, this isn't a cabling problem - I haven't even got as far as
connecting the piano to the computer.
Simply I cannot get any sound when playing a midi file in Qtractor or
Muse even though the editor and QjackCtl show that the file is being
processed (time counters advancing etc.)
Yet I can play a midi file using tiMidity (either in GUI or from command
line), and the sound on both my computers is generally OK in any other
situation too.
There's no point connecting the piano to the computer until I know I can
hear stuff from the editor.

You need to tell Qtractor or Muse which sound engine to use to play the
MIDI files. By default Qtractor, Muse or an editor like Seq24 do not
make sound by themselves. When using Qtractor, it can produce sound
through plugins (LV2, VST,DSSI,LADSPA) or through an external app that
is connected via ALSA MIDI (like Qsynth).

Start from the beginning.
Run qtcrl
Run qsynth
in qsynth->setup->soundfonts open a soundfont (you should always see at least
the default one)
in qctrl->Connect->alsa link your keyboard to FLUID Synth
when you play the keyboard the activity light on qsynth should flash and you
should hear a piano sound.
let us know if any of these steps fail.
