I have never found PCs to have satisfactory timing for sequencing, and
I've always thought that Cubase on the ST was the best desktop
computer-based sequencer.
Why the hell can't a 3.4GHz 64-bit processor do what the 6809 in my
Ensoniq ESQ-1 can do?

clocked at 3,400 times the speed, and is probably pushing over
10,000 times as many instructions. Surely it can sequence a semiquaver
roll without it sounding like turnips being tipped off a truck?
completely irrelevant if the CPU has masked interrupts or is stuck on
a kernel lock before moving on to handle the next MIDI note or decides
to schedule something other than your MIDI thread for one reason or
another.

I have fond memories of Atari ST's. I had an Atari 1040ST running HybridArts
SMPTETrack. It had a greyscale monitor, and I combined it with a Roland MT-32 and an
RD-250 piano, and that was my studio for a couple years.
I did a bunch of anal-retentive "masterpeices" on that setup, i.e. this one,
which is probably the most prog-rock-like thing I've put out:

I was all of 22 years old when I wrote it. It took months; I edited every single note of
it manually. It used up the maximum number of tracks that SMPTETrack supported (40, IIRC?)
and every last partial that the MT-32 supported too. A lot of the edits were to economize
on partials.
Somewhere I have the original file, a copy of SMPTETrack, and an Atari ST emulator for
Linux. IIRC the emulator patches the MIDI output into the ALSA sequencer. At some point,
I'll re-render it using LinuxSampler sounds.

Hmmm, I believe someone wondered how the Atari
ST's "6809" processor
could outperform newer processors? Among other things, it used a 68000
processor, not a 6809.
I had MIDI working on a Radio Shack Color Computer with a 6809 playing
multiple channels to an outboard synth. No problems, esp. considering
that the computer had to emulate a midi port with a bit-banging serial
port. Mine you, that was all the computer was doing :)
But, I still do wonder why with the super CPU speeds, advanced
instruction sets, buckets of memory, cache, fast storage, etc it's
still a challenge to do proper midi or recording on our computers.
