Hello,
I've been a windows user for (maybe a bit too) many years now, but I'm
starting to gain a lot of interest in Linux, especially as a Digital Audio
Workstation. I've already found Ardour or Reaper as possible replacements
for Cubase that I've used before. Now, I started to think about other
options. What would you suggest as a good substitute to replace East West
Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver as a symphonic orchestra in Linux
DAW? I'd like to hear some first hand experiences how they have worked.

Hi!
Now first hand experience, but all I know from earlier discussions.
I think quantum leap is no VST? If it is a VST you could try to use it in
ardour or in another linux vst-host application. If not, you might try the
windows emulator, but I'm sure too sure of the performance.
Another option, yet not as powerful, is using gigasamples. We have
LinuxSampler, it can read gigasamples from gigasampler2, but I think not (yet)
gigastudio3.
I hope this first very small impression can get you along a bit further.

Kontakt, at least Kontakt 2, ran decently under Ardour-VST with the wine
layer last I tried it, with the exception of the convolution reverb. But
the samples were perfectly usable. Admitedly I was only using the default
sample library that came with it, so it doesn't stand up to EW to my
knowledge, but it is an option. I am not sure how Kontakt 3 runs as I don't
own that to try it.
I personally haven't found a good sample library that is native to Linux
with nearly the same breadth and quality of samples as EW has in their
libraries. But maybe it is out there and I just don't know about it. In
the meantime running the VST under wine via Ardour-VST etc. may be your best
bet.

That's true and although the UI is way different from what I've used to, the
basic functionality is the same.

Are you sure Linuxsampler can't read gigastudio 3? It seems that in the
Features-page it states that there is support for gigastudio 3, and it seems
to be implemented for the most parts, mainly missing convolution (whatever
that is). And what do you mean with "not as powerful"?
I'd rather not use Kontakt in any form, as I've had some rather bad
experiences with it (e.g. Kontakt deciding after a week of decent workflow
that the patches that came with it are not for the version I'm using). After
some search it seems that the Sonic Impact's Symphonic-products are the
thing as they ship it in Gigastudio 3-format.
Many people complain about ardour not looking like cubase. Just forget

I'm not sure about the gigastudio3. I just thought I remembered that much. I
only have a few gigasampler2 samples here.
Convolution: You could simply say it's a very nice and realistic form of
reverb. Some sample-libraries (especially classic instruments) include the
reverb of their original concert hall.
with "not as powerful" I meant not as powerful as instruments shipping as
VST instruments or shipped with Kontakt player 2. As I've read it, they
include a lot of features only reachable by the shipped UI. There's just some
more "background logic" included. Whereas a "simple" sampling library,
only
including the recorded sound and mapping it to MIDI keys, just can produce
played notes with no big differences or random variations or instantly and
easily available alternative playing techniques. Say Strings: bowed, plucked,
etc. tec.
But don't get me wrong: I like my gigasamples and I'm fine with
LinuxSampler, I just think it doesn't compare to the features of the quantum
leap orchestra yet.
