Nice article. But colored by ideology.
I "switched" from Linux to Mac because...
-Now I have the freedom of choice what kind of apps I want to use (free software or pro
apps)
-I have no more headache about bad RT Kernels and user permissions
-Only one audio system - core audio - and it is easy to handle
-It works rock stable and very intuitive
-a very good workflow covering all technics of modern multimedia production
-the audio apps are mature production tools with all features I need
-Ableton Live - more then a DAW
-I can work with video and audio together without crashes
-I'm more productive with a Mac environment
-I doesn't need to be an geek/nerd to use my computer but I can if I want
Only some points. Very subjective.
I'm not "against" Linux -I think it is a nice OS for audionerds with a good
amount of time.
And for pure harddisk recording, developing and testing new concepts. Sooperlooper is an
good example: first made for Linux, then ported to OS X and now the
"mainstream-Daws" Live and Logic have loopers as new features in their latest
versions.

Hmmm, here we are again with Ralf with a Microsoft overview and now
Micheal waxing lyrical about Apple.
Each OS has it's place and both can be used to get things done quickly.
Many professionals build their whole studio around one platform.
Linux audio and multimedia is behind in terms of usability for non
techincal users. But everything that can be acheived in windows or mac
env can also be achieved in Linux env so it is only a matter of time
before it becomes accessible to non technical users too.
The real issue is not when it will become accessible but if we can
really be bothered making that happen. Many of us are too busy getting
things done to care for the immediate needs of non technical users.
Linux is probably always gonna be more difficult than windows or mac
environment. I wouldn't have it any other way.
BTW, I don't have much need for sudoku or crossword puzzles although I
have been known to sell games to people who do.

Nice comments. But colored by workflow choices and a preference for
simplicity over control.

The best reason you've cited, I think.
Sooperlooper is an good example: first made for Linux,

Which once again reinforces the same sales/marketing approach that the
entire audio tech industry offers beginners or relatively new users in
every field: "we'll make it simpler for you". Its a noble sentiment,
and would be a fine one if they actually lived up to the real desire
of users: "make it simpler without taking away any power, control or
options". In the real world, we know that this is not possible. And so
people buy integrated control surfaces/computer audio interfaces
("because its simpler") and then later find that they love the control
surface but need more channels/better quality/lower latency on the
audio interface side and they can't trivially upgrade just one
component without wasting money. Or they buy a DAW with its builtin
live-looper ("because i don't have to be a computer geek to get it
setup") but then discover that when they want to run the live looper
standalone they can't (or something else isn't quite what they needed)
and so they have to still get a standalone live looper anyway.
Thankfully sooperlooper is available at no cost. Isn't that nice of
Jesse?

The freedom being described will only come with interoperability, an
"openDAWS" or AAF-XML (some day) standard that I can use what I want, when I
want (with the common features).
Macs always catered to the artist/composer/author that just wants it to work,
first try.
Windows had the mass-market to produce polished applications.
Linux--can do anything but linux folks tend not to shell out the bucks the
windows users do so applications are not ported or polished. Heck, the Mac OSX
is based on freeBSD, a hop, skip and jump from linux--most of those lovely mac
toys could relatively easily be ported if folks would pay for them. Neither
will vendors create drivers (nor will they happily resease enough information
to let opensource hackers do the job!).
I have time and money (and data-files) invested in windows audio. No
interoperability? The window partitions must remain. Not much choice.
The MIDI tools I use work with WINE (with a few qwerks) so I can go that far
in Linux. My better sound card has no ALSA. I would like to do new projects
starting in linux. Existing ones remain in .... window-98!

Nor the benefits
of good RT kernels. As long as there's only one
kernel available, it can't be perfect for *everything*. But if you
don't notice the difference, then I guess you don't need it.

To each his own, again; for as long as I can remember, choice has been
one of Linux's bragging points. Nobody really wants unlimited choices
on *everything*, but would a pro athlete complain about having too
many choices of shoes?

*have* had crashes and lost work using OSX. It's intuitive I believe
because the GUI is designed in-house. If you look under the hood, you
see some very familiar Unix structures, which I have to admit I find
intuitive for a completely different reason. I HATE having to make
multiple selections using the OSX GUI.

Again, I like to choose between *many* very good workflows.

I'm opinionated on this. I was forced to use many of these tools
in
college and hated them. They didn't have all the features I needed.
They're good, but if your needs go beyond what MIDI is capable of,
some hotwiring is in order.

Good point. I still
haven't found a good way to do this with Linux.
xjadeo was recommended to me and had problems, haven't tried it
lately.

it's hard for me
to imagine anyone not wanting to be a nerd...
