In addition to what I have done before (see below), I have now created a
/etc/pcmcia/vxpocket.conf according to the description at the bottom of
the alsa-project page for the vxpocket card. And I have added the

The visible results of this is that
* The vx-* modules now seem to be loaded at boot
* The card is still not recognized by alsa (it is not listed in
/proc/asound/cards, and alsaconf does not find it).
* cardinfo no longer says "unsupported card", but "empty". It does
however list "IO 0x100-0x10f" and "IRQ 5" (or "IRQ 9d" or
"IRQ o"(?)).
* "cardctl info" and "cardctl ident" hang when they come to the socket
containing the card.
* Restarting the pcmcia service gives the following error messages:

I am beginning to suspect that I am up against some pcmcia bug. And I
am, at least for now, out of ideas of what to try next to get this card
working. Suggestions, advice and tips are very welcome!

The system is an ASUS L5000-series laptop running
DeMuDi 1.2.1. The
kernel is 2.6.12-3-multimedia.
So far, I have installed the pcmcia-cs package and the hotplug package.
(Do I need both of these? Do they conflict in any way?)
From what I have read of documentation, it seems that with 2.6-kernels,
hotplug is the way to go. Does having the "cardmgr" running interfere
with this?
I have also downloaded the alsa-firmware corresponding to the alsa
version installed (1.0.9). (DeMuDi does not distribute this firmware.)
I ran "./configure --disable-loader", "make" and "make
install".
This resulted in a set of files being placed under
/usr/lib/hotplug/firmware, among them, it seems, files related to the
vxpocket cards.
The PCCard system itself seems to be working. At boot, a Yenta card bus
bridge is found. And "cardinfo" seems to notice that the card is
present, but only says "unsupported card".
"alsaconf" does not find the card. Trying to load the snd-vxpocket
module gives no errors, and the module seems to be loaded afterwards
(see below), but the card is still not found by "alsaconf".
I have tried to run "vxloader" (is that depreceated?), which gives the
message "no VX-compatible cards found".
Where do I go from here? How do I get the card to be recognized? And
what do I do to get the firmware uploaded to the card?

OK, I will try to lay may hands on a newer kernel and a newer ALSA.
But could you please explain, or point me to documentation on, how
hotplug and pcmcia-cs works together?
As far as I know, 2.6 kernels use the hotplug system. Does this

With the recent 2.6 kernels, you need no longer cardmgr. The whole
thing is integrated to hotplug properly.

No. The driver has a proper entry, and calls request_firmware() to
load the firmware binary files by itself.

Each driver has an exported entry. You can find an alias in
the auto-generated modules.alias such as

Some questions arose:
When trying to load the example patches I got messages:
Unable to find object /amp_env/Delay Time (s)
Unable to find object /amp_env/Attack Time (s)
Unable to find object /amp_env/Hold Time (s)
How to know which ladspa library is missing and where to get it?
(I already have installed swh, blop, cmt from debian repository.)
When exchanging patches, how to ensure, the other system
can load and play the patches?
Will there be any way to save the plugins (embeded) together with the patch?
In the "Load Plugin" dialog (text-)keyboard input didn't work.
Is there any simple tutorial/example, that would explain, how to
make a polyphonic synth
(how to let it play 6 notes at once, when pressed on the midi-keyboard).
suggestions:
allow selected plugins to be duplicated (cloned), including the connections.
allow selected plugins to be moved/copied to sub-patches.
ladspa-plugins should have a short description of their
functionality, how and when to use them.

I very much like om's gui, it's really nice
the (bezier-)cables (patches) are cool!

Did you load vcf? I haven't tried the CVS version of Om, but the stable
version pretty much required it. I'm pretty sure it said it on the site
or in documentation, because I read it.

Are you sure there were no other messages before those? When I load a
patch that uses a plugin I don't have I get a message like this:
ERROR: Unable to load node /AmpIV_0 (you're missing the plugin

No. Can't do that with binaries, as there are varying platforms.
Can't do it with source code without reimplementing something like portage.
The only option for improvment I see, would be something like a
plugin registry and/or a common way to build plugins from source.

I'm currently running 2.6.16-rc6, hotplug and udev are both kust options
in the make xconfig. I don't use either here, on a heavily hacked FC2.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's

We got this working at LAC. Did not have time to methodically debug it
(we ended up changing several kernel config options) but I think the
critical one was to enable CONFIG_ISAPNP.
Is it an ALSA bug that the driver compiled but failed silently if this

better source of information when these queries come up, which is likely
to become more frequent as Linux Audio gains production stability.

I recommend to update ALSA driver, at least. Though, I cannot
guarantee that it works with that kernel :) I have also downloaded and installed alsa-firmware
1.0.10 (which placed

The VxPocket card is, however, still not detected.
/proc/asound/cards only lists the internal sound card and a modem.
Inserting the vxpocket does not causes it to be listed (see below).
On the other hand, an Edirol UA-25 usb sound card is detected if I plug
it in.
Is there anything I need to do that I have forgotten?
What would be the next logical thing to check?
IIRC, 2.6.14 had still old type pcmcia stuff. I have no more advise
for that version.

If you want to run old software but your hardware requires the latest
bug fixes, I don't see any good solution, other than for the distro to
back port bug fixes and new drivers, which Debian/DeMuDi don't seem to
be doing.
If a production environment wants to use a 2-year old kernel they had
better be willing to use 2-year old hardware if they need full driver
support.

Please, do not take this as a complaint. Although I am quite annoued
not getting my sound card to work, I am grateful for the help and advice
I have received from several people here.
However, I would like to point out that in this case, the problem is not
new hardware. The vxpocket card is bought around 2000, and I have
reports of it working with alsa 1.0.3. And the laptop is from 2003.
I also think that Tim is raising a valid point. I can fully understand
that those working on ALSA have more than enough to do with current
development, and that debugging errors on older versions running on
unknown hadware may not be very feasible. But that is not of little
help for those of us less skilled and stuck with what seems like (at
least for us having them) hard problems. Some mechanism for solving
situations like this would be most helpful.
I do not know what a suitable solution might be. Paid-for support could
be an alternative. A vendor selling "certified" hardware and
combinations of hardware might be another. I know that I have spent
more than a full week trying to solve my problem now (and more before
that), and would probably be willing to pay something for qualified
help.
The fact still remains, though, that the deepest insight into alsa is
found among the developers. So, for the hardest problems, the
developers would probably still have to be involved. And there we are
again.

couple of tries at this card on this laptop before, with no luck.

I have the server space, and good knowledge of slackware
package building...
BUT, I only would have packages for the iX86 arch..
the best thing would be to make nice SlackBuild scripts
available.
(also I don't have the server space for too many package
*.tgz files., and the SlackBuild script approach would mitigate
that.)
that way they a single package could work on all the arches.

BUT, I only would have packages for the iX86 arch..
the best thing would be to make nice SlackBuild scripts
available.
(also I don't have the server space for too many package

OK, I understand your point.
This is the work that the DeMuDi stable maintenance 'team' *er, cough*
should be doing. We're not off the starting blocks yet, as is probably
obvious, mostly due to lack of human resources. As A/DeMuDi itself only
has one full-time developer, Free Ekanayaka, the focus is necessarily
always on the next release rather than maintaining old or current
releases. I'm trying to figure out a game plan for maintaining future
stable releases. The ideal is that we don't have to bother bleeding-edge
devs with technical questions, no guarantees on that one!
I would request that the developers on this list be a little more
patient with people running old versions of their software. By all means
explain that you don't have time to deal with such enquiries, we will
respect that. This is a 'users' list and not everyone is testing the
latest releases, some people are running stable production environments
with software up to two years old - There are some good reasons for
taking this approach and as the software becomes more stable we will
have more users coming in who are sticking to the stable versions.
I guess the support needs to come from people who are already working in
such environments, so I'm hoping this will grow organically. However, I
don't see any harm in planting a few seeds. ;)

Yes. I downloaded alsa-firmware 1.0.9, and ran
"./configure --disable-loader", "make" and "make install".
Any chance you can try a recent distro? Kernel 2.6.12
is a year old...
Suggestions? I have been using DeMuDi stable, as this one gives me the
needed realtime setup (kernel and more) without any hassle. How
difficult is it to get this correct with another distro?
I did try the most recent live CD for Ubuntu Dapper Drake, but that one
did not find my card out of the box either.
(And I have previously tried Planet CCRMA, without any luck.)

Last time I tried Ubuntu with an RME device I was disappointed to find
that they don't make alsa-firmware available at all - I eventually gave
up and installed it from the ALSA site.
