Thanks to everyone who answered my questions so far.
Next in line: anyone got some good samples from an industrial
environment? I'm thinking of the typical machine-like sounds of the
eponymous genre.

It's a great synth. I created an odd set of percussion samples with it
that I've used in various sound-pieces.
I also donated my set to the OLPC project.

I'm running Ubuntu, and having great difficulty finding libpsphymod.so.0
library. Google hasn't turned up anything and I can't find the source
anywhere. Any ideas?

That lib is built with the synth, i.e. it's in the same package. Did you
find a binary somewhere ? If so, it may have been badly packaged.
I just built the synth on 64 Studio (AMD64), it worked fine except for
an X.org warning.

libpsphymod.so.0 => /usr/local/lib/libpsphymod.so.0

I don't manage to compile it, configure gets stuck here:

checking for Audio File Library - version >= 0.2.0... no
*** The audiofile-config script installed by the Audio File Library
could *** not be found. If the Audio File Library was installed in
PREFIX, make *** sure PREFIX/bin is in your path, or set the
AUDIOFILE_CONFIG *** environment variable to the full path to
audiofile-config. configure: error: * No sample I/O library found,
fatal!
No idea where I can find that lib, I don't even know what I should look
for.

I don't know Ubuntu at all, but you should be looking for
a package
named something like libaudiofile-dev.

i have the same issue. it compiled fine on feisty but gutsy gave me this
error. there is a configure option to skip this step (type configure --help
to find it, as i can't remember it) which got me through to the make stage,
but the compilation dropped out on some errors and i didn't have time to
investigate.

I built PSIndustrializer on Gutsy last night with only a small hitch.
It seems I didn't have libgtkgl installed. Once I installed that and
it's dev package all was well.

That's good to hear as that's what I'm running. I've checked it has all
libraries installed, but I still get this sound driver error: Broken Pipe.
Not sure what it means -- any ideas where to look for such? I understand
from the stuff I've read so far it's a driver problem; psindustrializer is
using ASLA output, but then again so is everything else. Although it does
seem I can only have one app using alsa at a time, and psindustrializer
doesn't use JACK. Any ideas?

Start it with strace, like
strace psindustrializer
Then paste the resulting log here.

Fair enough on all counts.
When I try to play stuff with this, I get a screech and an error box
which says "Sound Driver error: broken pipe."
I have gone back, done make clean and recompiled with the prefix=/usr
option. Google reveals nothing.
[BTW, Paul, as I'm still a little naive with linux, could we have an
offline about why symbolic links are bad?]

For the record, on Fedora Core 6 /CCRMA x86_64, one has to get, using
(k)yum, the GTK GL stuff and then run ./configure, make, make install
(last as root). That application compiles in a flash (virtually).
Packages like these has to be installed before compiling

Sure, you could load them there or in Specimen.

Yes. If you want to use them in an app that doesn't accept AIF files
(aka AIFF and sometimes AIFC) you can use a utility like SoX to convert
them to WAV.
IIRC, any app that employs libsndfile ought to be able to use AIFF files
directly.
