Hi all,
I'm confused, which of the 3000 scales here is the boring standard western
one?: http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/doc/scalesdir.txt
I've just added scala (http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/scala/) support to my
sequencer, and as much as I like playing in the scale of "Empirical Tibetian
Ceremonial", I'd quite like to jam with people :)

The boring modern western scale is 12 tone equal temperament (12-tET). It
may be there, but I cant find it :)

Depending on what kind of music you're doing, I found it quite
fascinating to use my microtonal guitar (some variant of just
intonation, 21 notes to the octave which was in fact made with help
of Scala) in jams with a slightly-out-tune yamaha electric piano and gamba
(tuned to a=415Hz, baroque style). Well, sometimes we do tune down to
415Hz but mixing tuning systems (12ET, out-of-tune 12ET, JI) is
fascinating. But then, we often avoid pitches altogether so it
doesn't matter much...
So where's the sequencer? I want it!

As I'm sure many of you know, Scala support is already present in
ZynAddSubFX and I think at least one other Linux softsynth (ALAS Modular
maybe?). I'll cast my vote for its inclusion in anyone's synth or
sequencer, I've had great fun playing around with Scala scales in the
Zyn synth.
So yeh, Dave, where's that sequencer ?? ;-)

It's not released yet, mainly cos I've had trouble finding a decent
alternative to sourceforge, and (mainly) I've been too busy writing/playing
it! :)
I think I described it a while ago. It's a bit specialist, but technically a
really simple OSC client/server that reads a text description of a melody.
This text score is designed to be created and/or manipulated live by the
performer, either using livecoding techniques (see http://www.toplap.org/ and
the toplap manefesto: http://www.toplap.org/?ManifestoDraft :)) or genetic
programming.

For the curious, I've just uploaded some code here:

The server won't build as I need to release a new version of libspiralcore,
and there are no client apps (AFAIK) that will accept the OSC note data, a new
release of the noiseweapon synth is needed for that.
But the front end python code might work anyway... :)

I've found it really refreshing to play with this stuff. I think you can
become a bit too obsessed, but it certainly makes you think a bit more about
the music.
