Hi folks,
Just a quick question regarding Motherboard selection for AMD-based machines
being used for Linux music applications... What models are recommended?
There are a bunch of them being listed in the local computer papers:
-M758
-M810
-K7S5A
-A7S333
Are there any pros/cons to going with these or others? I know you usually
get what you pay for, but these are all in about the same price range.
There isn't a lot of info available out there regarding this somewhat
specialized application (low-latency Linux setup with ALSA, JACK, etc.).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or advice!

Those are all single processor chipsets. If you're looking for SMP
goodness, you should look for 760MP and 760MPX boards.
I just happened to be researching AMD boards today too.

Well, I can't give you a proper advice since I don't know exact specs of those
MBs. But there are some things to watch out:
- watch out for the chipset: it's not good enough to be well-built, it must
also be nicely supported by the kernel. (Just look at the menuconfig help
entries and you'll find a small but present collection of buggy and unstable
ones)
- if you are going to work with EIDE disks, go for the best ATA. Watch out for
problems of specific southbridges with some disks (my A7A266's ALi is rather
peaky with WD disks)
- avoid motherboards with on-board stuff. These are too handled as PCI
interfaces and if you get trouble trying to isolate an IRQ for your soundcard
they can only make life harder.
- I think mentioning that you better use DDR is redundant...
That's it. Give them a hard time examining specs before you buy anything. :-)

KT333 (VT8367?) bridges have problems with cdparanoia. I had to add a
second ide controller to mine. ALSA didn't like the onboard sound last
time I tried (didn't try too hard). Otherwise seems fine.

I'm currently using an older A7V133 for testing Ardour. It's working fine
with the onboard EIDE controllers. I haven't tried out anything in terms of
burning CDs, but for me that would be through 1394 anyway on this box.
The SB Audigy works OK, for what it is. I run fluxbox and still get about 1
xrun every 30 minutes. I still think this is some process in the background
and not a fundamental problem with the hardware, but it hasn't been
important for me to figure this out yet.
I'm probably going to get a new UP Athlon system in the next couple of
months (Xmas break maybe) so I'm looking around like you.

I've been using an ASUS A7M266-D dual-proc board with good success
(two 1900+ MPs). Not the fastest FSB, but the MP boards haven't
caught up with the UP boards yet. It has onboard sound but
I haven't used it (ALSA supports it). lm_sensors works well for CPU
temp monitoring.
