Well, by stating it you are implying that it is your
opinion. My experience is different. I find Linux
audio production to have fewer distractions than Mac
OS 9.
No, that's not my opinion. I stated exactly what my opinion was. Please
don't misrepresent it.
Linux is far beyound a research platform.
Nor did I say that it was solely a research platform. It is much more
well-suited for research than Windows. IMO there is no competition there,
not only in audio but in other fields as well.
Since 1997, I've used exclusively Linux for everything but audio, finances,
and digital photography. Prior to that, I used it at work at a semiconductor
company, so I completely agree with you on that point.

For what it's worth, I am on my way to my father-in-law's house because
his windoze XP machine suddenly doesn't boot at all, complaining about a
missing or corrupt file. He doesn't run audio, games, video. Only email
and web browser when connected via a telephone modem.
In addition, I have 2 other XP computers on my home network (a desktop
and a laptop) which have both become unusable because of spyware and
other random problems.
Sigh. Maybe I should put fedora on my father-in-law's computer, and tell
him that it's the most recent version of windows. I don't think he'll
notice the difference except for the lack of random crashes and system
failures.

when i only had 512 mb of ram this was definitely the case, even with 2x as much swap as
ram, the only way to get out of 'swap hell' was reboot, the system became so
unresponsive. really easy to happen with a memleak, or during compilation or a runaway
script etc..
Sounds like some problems i've had years ago when i started with
unixes and partitioned oddly. Is the swap partition at the end of the
drive? It will take much longer for the disk to seek back and forth if
the application is reading/writing data and swapping at the same time.
Slow as dirt.
If you run bash, you could consider setting RAM/CPU limits for the
audio user (man ulimit) it's handy keep some resources free; enough to
login as root and gun down delinquent processes.

plugin that i succumbed to while using windows (believe me, though, that
was a lot more counterproductive).
how so, i made a lot of fun music that began via a pd patch that would randomly select one
of ~5-600 VST instruments and filters and then randomize their params, for the base
sounds. the trick was getting ones that didnt sound like digital poop when the params were
apeshit, Korg's VST's come to mind..
afaik it would still be pretty much impossible to do this on linux, but only because there
are no DSSI synths...

? Are you using an Audio linux system?
and is it 10 ot 20 times you need to reboot?
You dont seem to sure.
What errors do you get before the reboot?
I'm testing a 64bit Audio system in Alpha at the moment and its stable.
I also have Demundi and thats stable for Audio work (runs all day)
Most of my windoze problems were trying to get windows to put the Audio
at a higher priority
than calling home, or indexing the file system.
