Off topic but for audio...
As I write this how to, it would be handy to be able to paste pics of
say...Qjackctl setup screen into a html page.
Any ideas what I can use instead of having to do an entire screen capture?

$ man import
$ import -window root /tmp/rootgrab.png
It's in ImageMagick, and you even can grab the XDM login screen with
it. If you want to do edits,
You can also use the Gimp: "File->Acquire->Screen Shot"

I once had to do a bazillion screen shots for a tutorial I was writing,
and they had to fit within a certain max size.
A tiny bit of shell scripting w/ import and convert and
the process went MUCH faster.

Also with sleep, which gives you a bit time to rearrange windows
or do some dynamic stuff:
$ sleep 15 && import window root /tmp/rootgrab.png

I learned a lot of new options for this task from the kind responses everyone
posted...but I found an app called ksnapshot on this Yoper distro. It may
just be a GUI for one of the apps already mentioned but it was simple to use
and worked like a trooper!
And for the record... I did not want to capture the whole screen if I could
avoid it.

Nicest little on I found was xsnap. Both small and fast. No special
features in it though.Just grabs whatever part of the screen you point
it at...

You can use Ksnapshot. If you need to capture pull down menus you can
use xwd in a script with a sleep delay as in:
sleep 5
xwd -root -out output_file.xwd
convert output_file.xwd output_file.png
rm fred.xwd
Start the script then pull down your menu and wait 5 seconds. If you
want to capture a specific window instead of the entire screen you can
use -name windowname or -id windowid instead of -root. The "convert"
command is part of ImageMagick. If you don't have that you can use
something else to convert it (don't ask me what, I have ImageMagick ;-)

If you happen to have imagemagick installed you could as well use it directly:
sleep 5; import -window root output_file.png
No need to run ancient xwd :)

In fedora at least you can do Alt+PrntScrn, or just PrntScrn if you
want the whole desktop.
