Hi. Amazingly after emerging alsa-lib, alsa-utils, and alsa-oss, running
alsaconf, and pushing up the master volume in alsamixer, the sounds worked
OOTB. I had to add snd-seq-midi to /etc/modules.autoload.d, as it hadn't
autoloaded at bootup. The problem is that even though the midi keyboard shows
up in /proc/bus/usb/devices, it does not show up in Qjackctl's midi connect
bay. Tried modprobe snd-usb-audio, but it complains that there is no such
module. As shown below, the kernel config shows snd-usb-audio there, but
commented out. All relevant info further down. Nigel.

Because there's really no such module. Your kernel was compiled without
USB audio support.

Recompile the kernel with USB audio support.
If you don't know how to do that, ask on a Gentoo forum.

Please ensure that you *disable* => Devioce drivers => USB =>
USB audio and USB Midi.
Both are OSS modules and caused a lot of trouble here when
used in conjunction with the ALSA module
=> Sound => ALSA => USB devices => USB Audio/MIDI driver
BTW: OSS is marked as deprecated, but not the two OSS modules
mentioned above. Couldn't this get set or at least some info
that these modules belong to OSS?

Yes, this is a real bug. They need to be under Sound->OSS so they get
removed when the rest of OSS does. I forwarded your message to the
kernel mailing list.

kernel) . I'll try and find some info on compiling a new kernel without
interfering with the existing one. If it goes ok, and there are still
problems, I'll put those 2 OSS modules in the hotplug blacklist. With FC1 &
FC2 I had to add "Audio" & "USB-midi" to the hotplug blacklist to
get Alsa to

There's no problem yet, but it will as soon as you install
snd_usb_audio while the OSS-modules are still present. I had
lots of troubles with damaged sysex packages.
I'll try and find some
info on compiling a new kernel without interfering with the
existing one. If it goes ok, and there are still problems,
I'll put those 2 OSS modules in the hotplug blacklist. With
FC1 & FC2 I had to add "Audio" & "USB-midi" to the hotplug

As I got my Gentoo box snd_usb_audio was already there.
OTOH, I'm currently running a vanilla 2.6.10 with the RT-LSM
applied and I'm relatively happy with it.
If you plan to build your own kernel, let me know and I'll
give some hints.

Hi Christoph. Thanks for offering help with compiling a kernel. So you still
suggest putting USB audio & USB midi in the hotplug blacklist? I'd have
thought they would have shown up in lsmod. Perhaps not. Is there a list of
available files similar to Synaptic on FC1,FC2,Debian? Or can you suggest a
kernel to emerge so as to compile it from source code? Do I have to emerge
anything else to compile a kernel? The main things I want the kernel to
handle are 8139too for my NIC, and all the Alsa stuff including USB-audio . I
tried to compile the kernel when installing Gentoo. A terrible failure, and I
gave up for about 5 weeks. Went for it again the other day. All the system
had been emerged and was in the root partition, so I just carried on where
I'd left off , this time compiling the Genkernel, unfortunately missing USB
audio support. Thanks in advance for any help. Nigel.

Hi Lee. Thanks for the reply. I was sort of half expecting someone to say
recompile the kernel, when I saw that commented out snd-usb-audio module in
the kernel config file. The only kernel compile I've attempted is to get
Gentoo off the ground, which failed. Gentoo with system emerged stayed on the
drive to sweat it out (minus kernel) for 5 weeks. Got myself psyched up the
other day to have another go, and went for Genkernel. At least the system is
now up and running, but 30hrs of DL and compile to get KDE installed. I'll
get some info on compiling amother kernel, it's not so bad now I've got
Gentoo up and running. If it don't work I can revert to the original without
losing access to the system.
On the side. Did you ever get a sound recording for the Amtrak Acela (Email of
April 05). I've since been looking for a soundtrack I made while shooting
16mm footage of an A4 (Sir Nigel Gresley) steam loco. Going up a slight
gradiant, but really nice sounds. If you have got the sounds, I'd be
gratefull for them, and soon as I find the cassette, I'll send you mine.

No unfortunately I don't have a recording. Actually those trains were
out of service all summer, due to problems with the brakes, it's been a
big story in the US. I think they just put one of them back in service
a few days ago.

Don't bother recompile your kernel it is better to do this :
Just add this line in /etc/make.conf :
ALSA_CARDS="usb-audio"
and type this :
# emerge alasa-drivers alsa-tools alsa-utils
and you will be okay :)

Hi Dubphil. That isn't working. I added the bit to /etc/make.conf. Then
emerged alsa-drivers alsa-tools alsa-utils. Complained it couldn't find
drivers. Probably because they're part of the kernel. So ran emerge
alsa-tools alsa-utils, but no progress with this problem. I really do think
