I have about 150 uncompressed audio files that I want to properly categorise,
relatively quickly.
The very oldest were recorded as 16bit 44.1k, more recent ones were 16bit, 48k
and the latest ones 24bit 48k.
I've moved them all into the same directory, so is there a simple script I can
run that will scan this and list the name and details of each file?
I can find plenty of programs that can change the format, but can't find any
that will just tell me what it is :(

Well Will, I suppose you could just type
file *.*
or if some don't have an extention,
file *
or if they scroll-off too fast,
file *.* | less

Maybe this :
$ file bunting.wav
bunting.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM,
16 bit, mono 44100 Hz
It works with wildcards.
$file *.*
And you can redirect the output.
$file *.* > mylist
The sfinfo utility is even better :
$ sfinfo bunting.wav
File Name bunting.wav
File Format Microsoft RIFF WAVE Format (wave)
Data Format 16-bit integer (2's complement, little endian)
Audio Data 4398656 bytes begins at offset 44 (2c hex)
1 channel, 2199328 frames
Sampling Rate 44100.00 Hz
Duration 49.871 seconds
Also works with wildcards and redirection.

system, file sometiems give inadequate info or even wrong info, so tools designed for
audio formats or something like exiftool appear to be adviseable.

This script will do the main work, you can replace the sndfile-info lines with exiftool
lines, remember to change the grep expression.

I do like the exiftool output even better, since it tells you the format clearly, in case
an extension is wrong and you'd need a different conversion tool for some outlandish
format.

Once again, thanks everyone
As it was only uncompressed files I was looking at 'file' turned out to be the
simplest and fastest. I simply redirected the output to create a text file, then
picked it up with kwrite. As each entry was on a single line I bulk replaced the
unwanted bits with nothing and ended up with a list like this:
The_Long_Years 24 bit, 44100 Hz
The_Man_With_The_Hat 16 bit, 44100 Hz
The_Mystic 16 bit, 44100 Hz
The_Piper 16 bit, 44100 Hz
The_Storm 24 bit, 48000 Hz
...
Who_Cares 16 bit, 44100 Hz
Widow 16 bit, 44100 Hz
Wimpole 16 bit, 48000 Hz
Wires 16 bit, 44100 Hz
Yoshimi_Rides_Home 16 bit, 48000 Hz
Quite a few surprises!

You don't need to do it manually, you could use command line to format
the list.

could quickly hack something like this:
