Hi,
I just ordereed an electric bass (passive). I'd like to
directly plug it in into my soundcard and to use Linux as an
amplifier (and record it to ardour, of course).
As I'm not yet familiar to basses and guitars yet, I wonder
what I should use for the bass. There's creox, but it's a bit
dated.
OTOH, I thought jack-rack could be my friend. If so, which
LADSPAS can I use in conjunction with a bass? I guess (but I
do not know) that a compressor can do a great job. There are
several LADSPAS for it, so if anyone has a working setup I'd
be glad for some hints.

You're not really going to be able to do this, at least not well.
The signal put out by the passive bass is not going to be enough to
get a decent sound, no matter how you process it with plugins.
I just talked to my bass-playing son, who recommended looking at DI
(direct input) boxes, and suggests that if you really need to do this on
the cheap, Digitech makes a line of effects pedals for the bass that
have both amp and mixer output jacks, and that the mixer jack will be
OK to plug right into a soundcard. He recommends the Bass Driver pedal,
which will give you some good sounds. If you have an amp (either bass or
guitar), you might have an output on there that'll do the trick as well.

You can't plug an electric guitar or bass directly to your soundcard
unless your soundcard has a high impedance (sometimes referred to as
hi-z) input. If your sondcard doesn't explicitly say it has one, you
need something to convert the impedance of the signal. For this, you
need either a suitable DI (direct input) box, or (more preferably) an
external preamp with a hi-z input.

I haven't got anything usable (to my taste) out of creox. This is mostly
my fault as i've never really undrestood it.
OTOH, jack-rack is wonderful as you can use all available ladspa
plugins.
The DI bass i have tracked, has benefited a lot from the use of a
compressor. The idea is to use the compressor to lower the volume on the
start of the notes (the louder ones) and the "makeup gain" to get the
whole signal hotter.
Other stuff you could use are the "Tube amp emulation" and "Tube preamp
emulation" (with or without tone controls). With enough drive, you won't
need a separate compressor as the emulated amplifier drive will work
like a compressor when driven far enough. That will result in distortion
though, but the idea of amp distortion is to sound good. :)
That's the basics as far as i know. Next lesson is to experiment with
EQ, chorus, phasers, harmonics, delays. Good stuff can be achieved with
all of these, depending on your preferences and the music you are doing
(both in general, and the specifi piece).

thanks a lot for your efforts.
As Sampo said it depends on the soundcard used if you need a
DI box or not. I only have line inputs on mine, so I decided
to buy something like a DI box or anything similar.
I've just seen a Behringer which seems to be very flexible:

I'm really curious what I'll get out of my linux box using

According to the specs, it seems to have a 1M ohm input, so it should be
good (not "optimal" though) for a bass / guitar. Also, you can try the
drive on the preamp as an effect for the bass. It will (surprise,
surprise) work like i explained with the "tube (pre)amp emulation"
plugins.. :)

Then you might be expecting quite a lot! :)
As there is no "out-of-the box guitar/bass cabinet simulator" LADSPA
plugin and thus, you'll have to know a bit of what you are doing. I'm
not saying that you need a huge amount of experience & knowledge, the
willingness to learn is more than enough.
With the current plugins we have, Linux audio has huge potential for
building your own "amplifier" and "tone shaping/bending" processors.
Just don't expect it to sound "groovy" with the presets! (lol, like we
would have presets!) But my main point was this = you will not get the
"stadium rock sound" by simply plugging in your bass. You probably need
a combination of a compressor, eq, delay/chorus/reverb etc. to get the
sound you want. Maybe even more processing, maybe less.
Have fun, that's the most important part.

simulator" LADSPA plugin and thus, you'll have to know a
bit of what you are doing. I'm not saying that you need a

learn is more than enough.
Well, it needs experimenting I guess. I have some basic
knowledge about effects processing (I've been playing
keyboards for a long time).
With the current plugins we have, Linux audio has

I made the experience that LADSPAS sound much better than my
digitech multieffects processor.
I do not expect a stadium bass or guitar sound, but I hope to
get a good basic sound to do some work just for fun.

I cannot actually play the guitar or the bass, but I'd like to
learn it. I'm just trying to study jazz chord voicings but
it's much more difficult than on the piano. BUt I enjoy to
translate the knowledge from the piano to the guitar.

Frankly, if you're recording to ardour, then DI-ing it may be fine. Some kind
of pre-amp will help. The SC series of compressors can be useful, best bass
sounds are usually the least mucked around with in my experience.

thanks for the info. I even heard that on live gigs the bass
is usually directly connected to the mixer.
I've just ordered the Behringer Mic200 and I hope it will be
good enough to get a decent recording. There's still the
possibility to pipe it through jack-rack before entering
ardour or even to apply effects when played back by ardour.
