I have need to record a lengthy (2+ hours) live show non-stop, stereo, and was wondering
what Linux program is best at this. I've tried reading the docs and FAQs I could
find, and those docs that I could find say nothing of any recording time limits, or file
size limits. It's got to save in 44.1/16bit .WAV format, and run on non-jack Fedora.
I've got Audacity, but besides the fact that I don't know if it will do the length
of non-stop recording, it's quirky on my laptop. Sometimes it doesn't recognize
the input device, and only has one logical input device available. Other times it's
fine. There is no apparent pattern to it, so I hate to trust it since I can never predict
if it's going to work.

I have had success with making multiple hours long sound files with
the soxrec sox frontend and with csound. I recall a pd bug with
especially long sound files, caused by using floating point as the
file seek index, but this may be fixed by now. Since these programs
only operate on the current buffer when creating sound files, they
don't have explosive ram/cpu usage problems, the way that a program
that updates a waveform display or stores the sound in ram as you are
creating it can. From my experience with very large recordings, your
most convenient option is actually a series of shorter sound files,
with a few seconds of overlap on each adjacent pair. This speeds
load/save/effects times, and also prevents exposing those corner case
huge file bugs that so many otherwise reliable apps are prone to have.
Making the overlapped files may be hard without jack... perhaps you
would need to use dmix for the input device, or whatever the
equivalent would be? I am not sure about that part. I will see if I
can find the shell script I wrote to do this. Also using sox with the
trim command can make a series of shorter files from a mega file for
editors to work on.

Actually you wont find _any_ program that does a wav-file recording with more
then ~2hours length. Not because the apps are all crap, but because the
wav-format is crap. Its length-header is only big enough for just under 2
hours length. So there is no way to record a longer file in wav. (Learned by
experience.)
What I can _really_ suggest to be a good solution: timemachine (which is an
jack-app) recording to the w64-format. The gui is the best recording-gui I
have every seen. And if you decide to not do the whole show as one recording
but in multiple snippets, timemachine even records backward in time, allowing
you to start recording well until after the song started (you can set the
time to record backward from the commandline). I did use it rather often when
being the foh-tech and doing an recording at the same time...
And setting up jack to do recording is pretty easy as you don't need
low-latency for that.

Thought I could help until I got here. I record a band at gigs on my laptop.
Ubuntu and now ubuntu studio. ardour sitting on jack. Records several hours
just fine.

Give rezound a try. You could always record a few hours of background noise at
home... For testing purposes.

I routinely use audacity to record ~1.3 hours of continuous audio
on a laptop (Mandriva 2008.0) without any issues.

My personal favorite for simple wav file operations is mhwaveedit. It's
much less bloated than Audacity for simple recording/editing purposes,
and has always been much less flaky for me, also more robust than
Rezound, but without as many bells and whistles. Doesn't require jack,
handles large files well. I've never tried recording more than an hour,
but I suspect it would perform well up to the limits of the format.

I'd use traverso. It is more reliable to me than
audacity/rezound/sweep. It appears to have no problem with recording
long tracks, I just did a testrecord of 182 minutes length.
It works with alsa and jack, is cross platform, and if your
distribution doesn't have it included you can use the autopackage.
