I'm doing some solo gigs (midi backgrounds and me on sax). Up to now,
I've used a Casio keyboard with a memory card to play custom midi's.
Works fine, but I'm getting tired of carrying around the keyboard that
doesn't get played.
So, I thought I'd put the tracks on a mp3 player and plug that into my
PA. Only problem is that I can't seem to figure out (find?) one that
lets me select a track, hit <play> and, when the track is done, STOP.
I've tried a couple of portable CD players (one with MP3, the other
without), and my rockbox-enabled Iriver H120 player. They all want to be
music players and continue on into the night :)
I don't want to spend a fortune on this! Anyone know of a relatively
cheap player which will do one-at-a-time?

Get your hands on the cheapest iPod that Linux will run on
and install it.
Or get a used embedded board, some of them are sold for a couple
of bucks at Ebay

If you want a midi player the Yamaha QY-70 and it's replacement the QY-100
are about as big as a VHS cassette. The QY-100 uses smart media for extra
storage. The advantage of midi is the ability to change tempo or key on the
fly. And some audience members who are expecting a live performance are put
off with a cd or mp3 player but will buy into the QY-70 that you are
occasionally fingering. The QY-70 is designed as a backing instrument with
lots of patterns and great sounding voices. They go for about 200-300$
used.

Odd, isn't it, what the audience will accept and frown upon :) I was
thinking that with the vast amounts of karaoke around they'd be ready to
accept just about anything ... opps, I'm being catty again.
Looked on the web and the QY-70/100 certain look like neat units. I'm
not sure I want to spend quite that much for the occasional gig, but
I'll keep my eyes open. Honestly, I had no idea such things even
existed. Must be a small market. OTOH, it might be just as cheap to use
a low-end laptop as a player. At least that way I can get the text up to
a size I can read :)

Why not
edit the MP3's and append a few minutes silence?

when I was looking for "the player". I suppose that during the
thunderous applause I get after each song it'd be easy enough to stop
the player and cue up the next track.

I have a Cowon A2. I load up albums by keeping each in a different
directory.
If start playing in a directory, and repeat is disabled, the player
stops at the end of the playlist.
