Hi,
I wonder how many people use jack-rack.
Now and then I use jack-rack. IMO it's useful.
It's still provided by the AUR:
[weremouse@moonstudio ~]$ sudo systemd-nspawn -qD /mnt/archlinux/

At the Ubuntu Studio devel list is a discussion that leads to two
questions.
1. How much is jack-rack used? Especially how much is it used by Ubuntu
users.
2. Is there a replacement for jack-rack?
The reason for this questions is, that it's dropped by Debian and it's
interesting to know, if maintaining an Ubuntu package makes sense.

Carla has a rack engine mode that
works pretty much like jack-rack.
(plugins are processed from top to bottom)
The catch is that it's *always* stereo.
Mono plugins are loadable by using 2 instances, but uncommon plugins are
not.
reordering the plugins is not possible yet, but it's coming very soon.
but you can clone a plugin which will put it in the end of the list.
However, it's more than just an effect host and

You can build carla without any of
those.
In fact you can build carla with just gcc, but you won't get an UI.
The basic dependencies are just PyQt4/5 to get the UI running,
everything else is optional.
liblo is there for OSC support.
fluidsynth is to be able to load sf2 files.
linuxsampler for gig and sfz.
there are some internal plugins (like zynaddsubfx) which require some
extra libs,
but again this is all optional.
use "make features" before building to know what your build will result in.
PS: I recommend building with PyQt4 instead of PyQt5 for now, as that
will allow the carla-as-vst plugin to work, which is unfortunately not
possible with Qt5.

It would have been good to have LV2, VST and SFZ support added in
jack-rack, with backward compatibility, but it didn't happen. So
switching from jack-rack to Carla was the second best solution.
Now, what would be really great would be to have Carla (+Catia &
Cadence) in Debian.

I would download and run an older version of the system. It's basically
what i consider to be the benefit of keeping a production machine
off-line; security issues becomes irrelevant.
I know this technique is vulnerable to hardware evolution. But hey, so
is the industry.
Bounced frozen, uncompressed and separate (but evenly big, so the any
sequencer can find the start point) audiofiles in a lossless format
might be the best solution for durability or long term projects. ;)
