Hi!
To estimate subjective music lost (if one does exist for my ears) in 96/24 to
44.1/16 convertion, I need as high quality as possible CLI chain for
96/24 -> normalized 96/24 -> 44.1/16 with triangle dithering -> 96/24
convertion. Please, point me at aprropriate CLI tools (with tips how to use
them appropriately) to achieve that best quality :-)

Hi Andrew!
I'd still go for either the zita-resampler by Fons from kokkinizita.net or
for sndfile-resample, which should be in any distro, with Debianlike distros
search for it like this:
apt-cache search sndfile
Install the progs pakage.
Both have a nice help. Yet I don't think triangular dithering is the best
you can do. I think some kind of shaped noise.
resample --help
or:
sndfile-resample --help
should give you enough output.
With sndfile you'd also need sndfile-convert to change the bitrate:
sndfile-convert -pcm16 in.wav out.wav
sndfile-convert -c 0 -to 44100 out.wav final.wav
Or:
resample --rate 44100 --16bit --lips in.wav final.wav
Instead of --lips you can also use --tri for triangular dithering. I don't
know of any such option for sndfile-convert.

- for normalizing: http://normalize.nongnu.org/ with --peak option
- for sample rate changing: sndfile-resample from SRC
- for bit depth changing and dithering: resample from Fons

If you want control over the dithering best use Fons' resample for both
bitdepth and samplerate conversion. If not, I think sndfile-convert should be
fine.
For normalising, sorry I forgot that: I always use ecanormalize from the
ecatools (Ecasound). I guess your mentioned tool should work as good as that.

As for sample rate changing - do I understand well, Fons' intention is to use
resampling in real time processing? If it so - will it be comparable in
quality with SRC offline "Best Sinc" processing? I mean, real-timing can
forces some compromises in quality (with all my respect to and admire of
multiple Fons' tools which I use widely!).

Judging by speed, choose SRC's sndfile-resample. It checks for clipping and
reprocesses. Quite slow, but I've always been very happy with it!
