It's a capital X in Xsession. But you can just use any windowmanager
instead of Xsession. after the `export DISPLAY=:2` just launch wm2,
xfwm, fluxbox, ion3, icewm, openbox,... whatever.
You can also launch a terminal after that if the chosen wm does not
offer the means to start one.

there are some http://ffmpeg.org/legal.html considerations. So some don't.
You can always compile it from source, but due to the large amount of

I believe that my getting the ffmpeg from debian-multimedia this issue
has been solved
I dont get all this :-) All I know is I am using gnome which sometimes
seems to be using metacity.
Can I replace xsession by metacity?

There's almost no need for http://debian-multimedia.org/ anymore. most
things are available directly from DebianMultimedia

metacity is the default window-manager of gnome. but the gnome-desktop

mentioned are screen parent and host-cursor.
It however says its like xnest. So install Xnest and look at its man
page. No keybd options there either. But it says see Xserver. So I

As far as I know I am not using gnome (now). At initial gdm login I

FWIW, the procedure I used for my screencasts was:
1) Install the "openbox" window manager
2) Log out of your desktop, and log back in to an "Openbox Session" from
GDM, rather than a full GNOME session
3) Right-click on the desktop and use the menu to launch a terminal
4) Run Xephyr -- this command is a little different to the command from
the tutorial page, because the original command was segfaulting for me:
Xephyr -keybd ephyr,,,xkbmodel=evdev -screen 1280x720x24 -dpi 96 :2
5) Start the nested X session:
DISPLAY=:2 /etc/X11/Xsession

Hello Rustom,
You could try running gnome-session. Seems to work for other people:

The problem with running multiple Gnome sessions as the same user is
that Gnome wants to start a lot of Gnome related services and this can
cause weird behavior. That's why I use a minimal window manager myself
as the host in which I run Xephyr.
And for ffmpeg to support h.264 you have to compile it yourself as most
distro's do not ship ffmpeg with support for h.264.

After some (different) adventures I did get recordmydesktop running
but its performance is terrible -- I am trying to capture a 'film' pf
a score as it plays and it drops dozens of notes
